Attached is a write up about the BMX scene in Cincinnati Ohio from 1983

That is me on the cover ABA number 324 racing against Nick Peirson 14 and Scott Janesson 290 (those last names are not spelled right)
Beechmont Schwinn was the only local bike shop with BMX jerseys so everyone unofficially raced for Schwinn. They carried mongoose and Schwinn. There was an old guy named Mort who was pretty helpful with keeping his store full of BMX bikes. We used to ride 30 minutes to get there. It was pretty cool. 

Montomery Cyclery had some win aluminum handlebars and a couple of parts but didn't really do anything to support this movement.
