Re: 1981 RRS Racing
hey,
those are cantilever brakes..
RRS was the first to use those..
the things on the spokes are called zip ties, they make the wheel stiffer, according to some. I REALLY want an RRS 24" for the bmxmuseum.
they were the FIRST to make them!!!
Cheers

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
I had a red 20" (pretty rare around the track back then, only one I ever saw, too small for me too damn!), and I had a blue 24" crusier, the crusiers were suuuuper popular, great geometry, it was so nice never to have to readjust your brakes, or loosen or tighten your back wheel. The forks were called "Hot Legs" you can kinda make it out on the forks in the picture. They also used 110 or ten speed headsets which were considered higher quality then the bmx sized headsets of the day. I know somebody that has a white crusier I'll have to see if he could upload some pics. Oh and that Uni seat was called a Moon.

I just picked up a Trackmaster F/F off Craigslist..
it is chrome and totally resembles the RRS. Cantilevers and all! Gary, I'm gonna clean it up and break the Trackmaster section cherry )
it has a trippy bottom bracket that is held on with two clamps.. also has a square seatpost tube and even the square post!
Decals read Trackmaster Racing Products, Northridge, Calif.- one on the headtube and two on the legs of the forks..
does anyone know anything else about these bikes?
Thanks

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
If you look at some late 70's BMX Action mags there are some articles about RRS mods and they are done to early Garry Turner (GT) frames.

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
I want a 20" RRS BAAAAAAAD.
Love those things. Have since the day I saw the article in BMXA on Geoff Rutherford's RRS prototype. They used a GT for the frame. Had the coolest, painted, crossbar-less Cook Bros. bars, too. That was a SICK bike.

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
I have an RRS I'm working to restore... If you know them well, PLEASE help me. I'm trying to figure out what brand the original CL brakes are. I need to find a replacement, as the original are gone. I also need some info on how the original crank works with the eccentric bottom bracket. Looking for a gold non drive side shimano 600 crank, so if you got one, lets talk $$. Not sure what the original pedals are for my model...suntour, kkt? Help a brother out.

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
I was once told the brakes are RRS, but I don't think so. I think they are early Dia-Compe cantis. Some people use Mafacs.
I have a pic of Geoff Rutherford's RRS (It's actually a modified GT.) and it shows the brakes. I can email you the article if you send me your address. I've wanted and RRS ever since I saw that article. The bike is total sickness.
The BBs are easy to use and adjust. The eccentric is meant to help you tighten the chain. Instead of pulling the wheel back, you rotate the BB in the eccentric.
I'm not sure RRS ever sold completes, but maybe. I only know of the frame kits, which had the f/f, BB, brakes. You can probably build it as you like.

I'm with you Planet-X! I remember freaking out when I saw that article in the mighty BMXA. I've always wished they had published those pics in color. I know it would have crushed my dreams even more - $800 frogskins back in 1979! Holy Cannoli!

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
Yep. I still wish it was in color. I've been told the bike was red. Looks like almost everything except the alloy stuff (stem and rims excluded) was red. I've looked at that article 4 or 5 times this week. I really want to build a replica of it. Kind of looking for a suitable GT frame to start with.

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
I'd like to see what the dropouts looked like - if they were modified as well. Good luck finding that bar/stem combo!

Re: 1981 RRS Racing
Yeah, I wish there was a better pic of the DOs, too. Repop bars should be easy. Say Johnny Chopper CBRs with not cross bar. That stem tho. . .I'm betting I could get something made. It's just a square with some holes in it. But I'd be okay with a Tuf. His is kind of short for me.
