1994 Standard Shorty

Standard shorty frame and fork

I picked this up out here in Colorado for the cranks and it has some history but unfortunately I only know bits and pieces. Fred Gates, a factory rider out here back in the day recognized it as one of the first shortys that some other rider out here got from Rick. I think he said it was pink originally. It had boss cranks. It is custom painted black with red specks that show up in the sun. I no longer have this frame and fork, I traded it to a buddy of mine.

Nice shorty.  Don't see too many of those.  So beefy.  Fred Gates?  I used to ride with him back in the day in Thornton CO.  Do you have information?  He can check my profile.

I don't have his contact info, but I think a buddy of mine does.  I ran into him at Veloswap but I met him at an old school bmx gathering.

Re: 1994 Standard Shorty

Any informatioin would be greatly appreciated.  I was in Denver for my 20th reunion and as I drove through the old neighborhood I swung by his old place (I doubt he lives there now) - it would've been cool to see him again.

Re: 1994 Standard Shorty

Oh I can tell you all about that frame and the entire bike including every part that was originally on it. The reason is that it was mine and was stolen out of the back of my van in Arvada Co in 94.

It was originally pink and was the first shorty in colorado. I know because I ran the shop in Arvada and I placed the custom order to Rick Wagner at Standard myself and he told me so. In fact I have the replacement twin of it still in storage (insurance money)

The Bars on it were originally WAL San Quentin bars (I had just put them on as a matter of fact). The headset was rigged in a way that I came up with with a GT Epoch self tightening headset. The stem was a DK drop stem. Peregrine Super Pro HP 48s of course. Front had a standard axel. Front brake was an ACS Boa. Standard Hand grenades front. Custom 2" x 4" steal pegs in the rear that were made for me by Luke Newens. ACS RL Edge tires with thorn resistant tubes and slime. The seat post clamp is a profile clamp that was never made in that size. I had to hone it out myself to fit a 1" post. Whoever stole it from me, totally jacked up the back brake rig. That part was originally on the upper gyro section. The middle part that is holding all the cables was made for me by Luke Newens. It is supposed to be set up to run dual cables all the way to the brake (pre london mod). The boss cranks had a chip off the chrome near the spindle on the non crank side I believe (pretty sure it was the non crank side). Made the mistake of hitting it with a hammer when I first installed them. Had one of those GT buzz saw polished sprockets if I remember correctly. Back brake is a Shimano Deore XT that I ran on quite a few frames. Was like hell trying to find another one. Back wheel had a silver RL Edge freecoaster hub that was originally owned by John Skeeba, then Mike Hill, and then me. Also was hard to replace.

A friend of mine in North Denver saw it the day after it was stolen, but didn't do anything about it because it was north Denver and he very much liked the idea of not getting shot. I'd like to have it back, but I have no delusions that I will ever see it again. Broke my heart when I lost that bike. Makes me wonder how Fred was involved with the whole thing. I knew Fred pretty well.

So please, if you believe in doing the right thing and have a moral distain for bike thieves as much as I do, please return it. I know that I will be ignored though.

Re: 1994 Standard Shorty

sorry Jake.   That sucks.

Life is short.  Spend it!  Always on the hunt for Peregrine wheelsets, anything Standard, Homeless. If you have sold me a expensive bike I thank you for letting me buy the way I did.  Makes it possible for those of us that hide BMX monies from our spouses.
