Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Hello,

Is there anyone that will rebuild a rear Skyway Tuff Wheel I mag (76) with a Bendix Coaster brake thats on my Redline Squareback? Im going to call it my races or cups for the rear hub; they are cracked and if you tighten the rear wheel up in the frame the wheel will lock up. Does anyone sell the parts that I need to rebuild these or know where I can get them? Please get me some more information. I have looked for the rebuild kits and I even purchased a kit but of course it was not the correct kit for the rear hub rebuild of a 1976 coaster brake Skyway Tuff 1 mag. I would be willing to pay someone to rebuild the mag. I would pay for shipping both ways of course. Please let me know if you can help. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

I dyed my mags but the brown spots stayed. Do you guys think that bleaching first then dying would eliminate the spots or do I need to soda blast?

I'm thinking of trying this with my GT mags. Will the bleach strip away the black in the GT logos on the wheels?

No , the bleach wont harm the GT logos. Just don't leave them in more than 24 hours and protect the bearing races and any other metal parts with vaseline.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

I've just payed good money for an original set of black skyway II's ... I was rubbing them back with a fine wet rub to remove some scratches and scuffs, low and behold the rear is painted??! Thanks ebay.
So it's original red but been painted black, do I just re-paint it black or is there another way? Most posts so far are for bleaching and colouring but I want to go black. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Old post but it's worth a shot. I have had one of my original z rim hoops laying around forever and recently found a super faded Grey one. I really would like to dye them hot pink to use them on a build. I am very skeptical about getting them to match. Anyone attempt to match dye color of mis matched color wheels?https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/206716/20210523_00043760a9e2b20a.jpg

Not sure how they would come out?
All those spots and imperfections would show in the pink.
What is the OG color under the faded gray?

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

question about dying.  If i dye a set of white skyways yellow, does the dye penetrate enough to prevent the brake pads from rubbning though to the original white?

Also, i have a orginal pair od tuff II mags with the metal/alloy hubs.  the front bearings are about to go.  Are those servicable?  Can i remove and repack/replace the bearings on those original whheels?

No it won't dye deep enough.
Yes the bearings are serviceable.  Just thread off the axle  nuts and cones. The  bearings are loose bearing and will fall out. If they are bad you can buy replacement  ones at your local bike shop.
