Phil used some kind of epoxy I think. The only thing that sucks about 1st gen Phils is that there is no flange in the hub shell to keep the bearings in place, so if you get a really hard sideways hit, the whole axle and bearings can slide to one side and pop out. Loctite works fine as a replacement.Wow, seriously?
Guess that's why they are 1st gens, and not current gen.
Can't believe a hub manufacturer would not put bearing seats in the shellwell it was literally the first attempt at a sealed bearing hub. they made them like that into the 90s. phils are junk
I wouldn't say "junk". Still got my original 1st gen rear from bitd, rebuilt myself with new bearings. Didn't even bother with loctite or epoxy
I rode like 50 miles on a critical mass this summer on those Phils, bunny hopping and hooning around the whole time, and they never even budged.

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
Out of curiosity, I have to swap the axle and possibly freewheel on my rear Mohawk hub. I have 3/8” dropouts on the frame the Mohawks are going on, so I found a 14mm flat axle to fit drop outs, but not sure what freewheel to pick up. Found a Halo Clickster online for around $60. Any suggestions there?

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
Not sure if this is helpful but this is a GT Superlace 36h Gen 3 FRONT hub.
Looks like the balls are 3/16”. They can’t be metric because the conversion puts them at 4.76mm. Each side of the front hub has 8 balls.
The counterbore for the bearing race is 24.51mm or 0.965”.
The bearing race ID that the axle passes through is 11mm or 0.435”.

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
.961 is a weird number, ofcourse calipers arent real accurate but thats not close to a common number in standard or metric.

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
The rear hub is 29.5mm (1.160”) on the counterbore. The ID for the axle is 12mm.
The balls are 1/4” diameter and larger than the front hubs.
While I still have them apart, anymore questions?

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
GT Superlace 1st Gen
And GT Superlace 3rd Gen for comparison. So sealed bearings vs sealed mechanisms.

The axle has always been the issue to track down since the thread started. Most axles are sold by the hub, but dont have the dimensions listed.

Funpig and El Greko:I have GT hubs like FUNPIGS, so you have to pry/hammer out the ball bearing hub? Any suggestions on where to get those good purposeful axles now that there is some hind sight?

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
Yep, I used a strong steel punch and just hammered the cups out. Seems like I remember it was slow going, but I don't really have the right tools.
Never found suitable axles either. I need to take new measurements I think but the project has been on the backburner for awhile.

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
Hi there, this Michalis from Athens Greece.
I have a pair of GT Mohack hubs. My front axle is damaged. I can't find nowhere to buy it online. Anyone has any idea where to find one?
Its 150mm long and has a 61mm shoulder.
Thank you.

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
I have the same black GT hubs and would like to convert from unsealed bearings to sealed bearings. Also change the axle and dust cover. Is it a good idea to follow EL Gekos process or a different format?

Re: Converting my GT Mohawk hubs to sealed cartridge bearings
Well I am doing a couple sets right now and here is what I discovered for axles. Mt bike quick release axles! The fit into the bearings perfectly snug! Now I need to go to the hardware store and find something to use as a spacer in between the bearings and a aluminum rod I can slice up and use for the axle spacers like the original sealed Mohawks.

The bearings? I lightly tapped mine in with a smooth hammer. Just one side. I still need to get my spacer for inside the hub

Stick the axle in in and use the jam nuts to pull it down.
Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86. Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly. There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.
