OK, It’s 1979 or 1980. You have a Redline MXII and you want to upgrade your pedals from the turd, roached Rat Traps. What pedals are you taking on an extra paper route to buy?

Not very common on BMX but Phil CHP pedals. I had a set that I was going to use on a 83 Redline but never did. No grip though...

Suntour or KKT Lightning or KKT RT-F pedals.
Take a look through the old mags the variety was pretty limited.

From the ads it appears that KKT and MKS ruled the rat trap pedals in 79 and early 80. But MKS also had a caged pedal as well called the  Sylvan BM-7 or just BM-7

Not sure when Excalibur started making pedals but the seat post clamps are all over the 79 and 80 ads.

You can find a lot of these magazines at oldschoolmags.com

Anyone know off hand when the first platform style pedals took off?

i probably had a 10 speed bike i cannibalized to get a seat for the banana seat bike i was trying to make into a bmx,
and i probably tried to change the axles from the busted ones into the cages from the 10 speeds pedals, then i just rode on the one axle i couldnt make work

First check out the Speedplay pedal Museum timeline.  Then get some Reedy pedals....   Heck, I'd need a spare paper route now to get them.

Did that once and hated it. I ended up with a mismatched pair from 2 different junk bikes.
It's no wonder I have so many spare parts these days. I guess I'm afraid of having to do that again.

I have found that the KKT surefoots are nice rat traps though.

KKT Lightning, not sure what year DX pedals came out, but once they did, they were by far the best.

I believe it would have been first-gen KKT Lightnings. The ones that didn't have any teeth on the ends and were designed to make your foot slide off (particularly if your shoe got wet or had any oil on it).

I just noticed that MKS re-issued the BM-7 pedals in 6 different finishes and sell for $39 at planetbmx in case you want to see what those look  like.

Yeah. I have them on a few other builds Ive done. I may go that route with the MXII as well just to get it riding and then just keep an eye out for some OG pedals.
