Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

For all you Araya Aero people out there, just adding to the info, sorry if its' already here somewhere, haven't the time to search thru whole thread...
This is what worked for me -

20" Araya Aero's
Shimano DX High Flange Sealed Hubs (1983 i think?)
188mm Spokes
12mm nips
4 cross

Only thing i got wrong was not getting the hub stampings in line with valve hole, thought i had it sorted at the start but ended up at exactly 90 degrees offset, not the end of the world...

I find the lacing method in this thread more difficult than what I do, but I've been lacing my own wheels for 20 years now. I do one side with every second spoke, then flip and repeat. Rotate spokes by turning the hub, and then finish lacing both sides and onto truing and tensioning. I only have to bend spokes into place on the last two steps.

I think it is great that a lot of you guys took the leap and tried lacing your own wheels. Once you do, you will always build your own wheels since it is very easy to do.

Good stuff lads and well done.

This sounds like what I do. But I taught myself and don't know if it's right. lol

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

If anyone is restoring Peregrine wheels I saw that the Peregrine brand is back in 2019! They have some restoration decals available on wwwteelbikes.com. I’m excited to see what comes next.

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

For an exp builder, how long would it take to lace a set of wheels?

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

I’m not an expert and it takes me about 30-45 min Per wheel start to finish. I’m very careful not to scratch the rim, and lube all the spokes. An “expert” could probably cut that in half.

It’s not difficult. Getting started on your first set will take a little time and focus, but once you’re familiar, it’s not difficult at all. Just follow the steps in this thread and you’re golden.

I haven’t learned to true yet. Been meaning to buy a stand and start teaching myself.

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

Laced my first set when I built my scrambler. Found 2 nice vids on YouTube. One for lacing, one for truing without a stand. Not sure if they allow posting links to videos on this forum...https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/248286/20200719_130519_copy_846x8465f63dccece.jpg

If I had a nickel for every time I've been cursed by a puppet I would have 2 nickels.  Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
