if possible, could we get this added to the first page......
just got back from albes, and turbo did some measuring for me. i know the areo question has been asked before so i went with the goods to the main man.

20x1.175  araya aero and high flange hub
3x177
4x188

im guessing it would be the same for small flange, but will know for sure after i lace up my aeros, as im using a high/low hubset

I'm posting info related to your post below (so I can upload pics)

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

Hi streetfreak!

EDITED on 04/05/2018

I was wondering if you had the various measurements "turbo" used to come up with these numbers.
I just measured my Araya Aero hoop using a method from the Park Tool website and got an ERD of 385mm (3mm larger than my previous 382mm measurement)
My wheels came off a 1988 Redline RL20II, I polished the hubs myself and sent the hoops to the chrome plating shop.

Hoops: Araya Aero 48h
Front hub: loose ball Suzue/Peregrine 48h
Rear hub: loose ball Suzue/Peregrine 48h
Lace pattern: 4X

Spoke length result

Front: 180.2mm
Rear: 179.4mm

That said, I think I'm gonna have some 15g Asahi chromium spokes cut to 180mm for both wheels.
Hope this helps and I will post any changes and the finished wheels of course.

Here are the two screen shots with the measurements I took

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

I’ll admit, I didn’t read every page on this thread. Please forgive me if this is already answered. I just recently cleaned my garage and found some Son Of The Bomb 48s hubs that I purchased years ago. The flanges are much larger than most hubs I’ve seen. Is there any info on spoke size for these? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes... so yes, that is normal big_smile

Some hubs will even run different spokes on the left vs right sides.

And just to sow the seeds of confusion - the wheels on my 2013 DKOI XXL have 3 different lengths on each wheel,
to allow the 32H rim and 36H hub (intentional) mismatch to work:

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

Still trying to figure out spoke length for my future race bike. All parts are in California and I live deep in the jungle on Maui. Going to do a 3X pattern with mid school Kovachi hubs (titanium axles , low flange , 36h) and 20" Odyssey T-1000 rims. Want to get some aqua/turquoise titanium spokes and some gold nips so I can lace em up and be that much closer. Bike is going to be a neck breaker to say the least! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you provide a picture of the hubs? I can provide the ERD of the hoops, but I'm not sure what hubs you are referring to.

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

i wont be able to get a picture of the hubs until early october. john kovachi laced them up in 1995 for my titanium terrier and the rear is a flip flop. almost 6 years ago i cut n rethreaded the spokes for my supercross build. am now building my next chromo supercross race rig and i want all the parts to stay in cali so i dont have to worry bout rust n corrosion as well as shipping it back n fourth every time i race. anywho , can get pics in early october. thanks so much for the response! means a lot!

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

Just pulled apart some araya 7x 20" with hutch ti/mag hubs. Measured spoke length on front and rear were at 192mm.

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

the post has an example for bullseye hubs on 7x arayas listed as;

Bullseye Hubs with Araya 7x (single wall rim), 3x pattern
Front 188mm
Rear 186mm

i found that to be incorrect using my measurements

i entered all my calculations of measuring the hubs and using the ERD for 7x araya that is provided on thread or side thread and came up with 191mm spokes on rear and 190.3 on front

bullseye rear hub (i have a thin washer between lock collar and bearing)
7x ERD 394 (provided in thread)
42mm flange diameter
108.5mm O.L.D.
28.75mm center to flange center on Drive side (25.5mm outside to flange center)
30.25mm center to flange center non drive (24mm outside to flange center)

Bullseye Front Hub (no washer between collar and bearing)
42mm flange diameter
94mm O.L.D.
24.5mm center to flange center on left side (12mm outside to flange center)
24.5mm center to flange center on right side(12mm outside to flange center)

i used this calculator
https://bikeschool.com/resources/spoke-calculator

Re: Spoke Length Database For Wheel Builders!

I making out these sheets so I can keep track of the wheels I build. I think I'm going to draw the rear hub to have a freewheel on the right side so it's not confusing to me. If anyone wants this in PDF format, PM me. I'll update this when I get the rear hub redrawn.
