Tell me about the last days of Schwinn

My first BMX was a Schwinn Automatic Joey Garcia.

I still have one but not my original one. I’ve always been interested in the final years of Schwinn BMX before the 2001 Bankruptcy and recently picked up a 2001 Predator Trail.

Seems it’s a 1 year only bike, was production in 2001 cut short/stopped early ?   Are these bikes rare ?

I’m not confusing rare with valuable but out of curiosity?

Re: Tell me about the last days of Schwinn

Some will argue that Schwinn died after the final Americana framed rolled out of Chicago and they began producing overseas, which I think was ‘82.

Does the BRAND no longer exist at all?
I thought I've seen some lately..

Heres my profound, life changing statement.
Lifes a bitch..PASS ME A BEER.

They're reacting and that's wonderful. It's better than them sitting there doing nothing. I say make them react - do whatever's in your power to move the audience, and if that's where it is, and there where it is with America, sex and violence, then I say project it.

Wally world bikes now, IIRC.

Their mid school bikes were awesome. I had a Powerglide in black and a custom pink Hydraglide in pepto pink. Before Farris, I may add.

Re: Tell me about the last days of Schwinn

I don’t see the Joey Garcia model that often. There is one for sale near me on CL for the same price as a decent Thrasher.  It’s been listed for a week or so with no photo.  It is not a common bike because they only made it for one year. I do not remember how widely distributed it was.

I have a Predator Trail, it's a long heavy tank I've built for speeding through city streets. There are some here in the Museum, search the Bike section by brand, model, and year.

I'm curious to know more about the 2001 era switchover too.  BF was riding for them until 2000.

Re: Tell me about the last days of Schwinn

Firstly, yes this Predator Trail is a tank for sure.

It would be a rough bike for a kid to pedal uphill, she is heavy.  On the other hand, it’s probably indescribable.

I’ve read all I’ve been able to find about the sale to Pacific in 2001 but I’ve never seen anything about production halting, or even any discussion about that era of Schwinn BMX or their last real designs.

Am I wrong that the Predator Trail was their last new BMX before the bankruptcy?

Re: Tell me about the last days of Schwinn

Long story short-

When Scott (Boulder CO.) bought Schwinn in circa 1992 what they were really buying was the Schwinn stationary/exerciser division as that was where the money was as the spinning craze was the up and coming thing. The Bicycle division assembled a new team and was more or less given carte blanche to make something of the division. Skip Hess of Mongoose fame was brought in as president and they set out revamping the lines (hence the BMX race team stuff all looking like 1960's race car teams; the bikes being named things like Pro Modified, Pro Stock, Super Stock etc. as Skip was a drag racer prior to crating Mongoose in the 1970's). MTB's got priority and the famous Homegrown was born. By 1994 they had started forming the new BMX team around the Foster brothers and in 1995 the new line of BMX bikes rolled out. Around 1999 the .com bubble broke and the economy got a bit rough, and by the end of 2001 the writing was on the wall and Scott sold the Schwinn name to Pacific cycles who then moved away from the licensed Schwinn dealership model to the Wally World business model.

As for the various racer's names on bikes, there is a difference between what are commonly called the "Signature Frames" and the regular line which just happened to be marketed with a team member's name on the decal. For example the limited production, special order, USA-made "Joey Garcia El Jefe" was not the normal production model "Joey Garcia Automatic". The former was sold as a high end frame/fork combo you had to build up, the other was a normal Taiwan-made production bike sold as a complete in various level of trim.

Re: Tell me about the last days of Schwinn

The book "No Hands" is a good read about the fall of Schwinn...especially the part where they called bot BMX and Mountain bikes a fad. Ooops

It survived as a brand better than Torker.
