Re: 2013 SE Lil Ripper rebuild

Can't believe how long it's been since I posted / made any progress. Got remaining bits from bmxguru including the stainless spokes and alloy nips. Hope to finish within the week.

cool

What paint did you use on this? I'm lazy, so if you already stated, I'll go back and read later. Also what did you do to prep the aluminum for the paint?

All the paints, base, splatter colors and clear were enamel paint. To prep for primer once had all the original finish off, used scotch brite pads with dawn detergent to get any oils, residues off. Then prior to primer wiped it down with mineral spirits. Lite scotch brite between primer coats, with mineral spirits wipe down each time. Once I got the base coat on, till I was finished with the last clearcoat, I never touched the frame / fork with hands as I had rigged up a hook for f/f so I could hang from tree branch to apply coats, then after some time to dry in the sun, transferred to the garage where they could hang overnight to keep out of the elements.

Re: 2013 SE Lil Ripper rebuild

Heading to LBS in the morning to get wheels tensioned.

Got new alloy nips, ss spokes and stripped the faded black annodized hubs and gave light polish to keep more of a machined look.

Started off like this

Mock up - the majority of remaining parts are black. Tires going on are Haro all black with street tread.

Re: 2013 SE Lil Ripper rebuild

Decided I needed smaller width grips since the handlebars are fairly narrow which on the brake lever side creates a situation where the lever gets positioned too far into the curvature of the bars and doesn't fit well for reach.

While doing that I remembered something I've done in the past on the non brake lever side. On non lock-on grips where bar ends are used, I like to use a grip stop. Rather than buy one, I repurpose the grip locks from a torn / beat set of lock-on grips. There are all sizes etc of these locks, but if the lock when fitted has enough surface mated to the handlebars you can use it for a grip stop. Figured I throw this tip out there as others might find it useful. I'll show a finished pic once I install the grips, but for now here are a few pics so you can see what I'm talking about:

In person the seat matches pretty good with the paint.

I typically like black seats but think this one works well for this build and once all the other parts are added (which are all black) will come together good.

Not too mention this was the seat that came orginally.

Eric12 hooked me up with basically new bars, seat and a stem that helped keep the budget inline cool

Re: 2013 SE Lil Ripper rebuild

Odi bar end along with the repurposed grip lock. Think it goes better with the overall color scheme than the blue Ami's did

Polished out the cone spacer to match the grip stop, hubs and few other polished bits.

Re: 2013 SE Lil Ripper rebuild

Using a set screw on the tensioner. Going to paint the raw bit of the tensioner black but to see the set screw etc easier left it as seen for the pic cool
