Re: 26" Cal Custom Cruisers and Strandies...ONLY!

I also vote to clean it up and keep the original finish. Here is a pic of another one at The Gary Turner swap a couple of years ago. I was told that it is also a Laguna. It has the Laguna fork. The frame looks identical with the same pierced seat tubes, cigarette box, rear dropouts, etc. It also has the same Takagi crank set up.
Very cool find. Congrats!

Re: 26" Cal Custom Cruisers and Strandies...ONLY!

I did a few changes to the Bassett:

Suntour slant stem with a set of widened Powerlite Powerbend bars:

I installed a Phil Wood front hub and blueprinted and polished the rear Bendix hub:

I custom machined hat washers and dropout savers for it as well.

Mine when I first built it and cruising along St Augustine Beach... I love riding this thing.. would love a Laguna or Bassett...but the frame was free and I had some of the parts laying around..btw first seatpost bent in 5 minutes...the one on there now is solid aluminum and could withstand a bomb...

These girders are a pain in the ass to get adjusted perfect but finally a got some good advice from somebody that was familiar with them and that was "Don't try to get them perfect cause precision wasn't a top priority when they were made  " Then it all made sense wink

Re: 26" Cal Custom Cruisers and Strandies...ONLY!

Sweetheart Cycles was a shop run by a guy named Bicycle Bob in Long Beach, CA. I used to go there with a couple of friends who worked there. Bob was friends with Scot Breithaupt and also a big mountain bike guy. I was talking to Perry Kramer last week, he still has one of the Sweetheart Cycles Moto Cruiser mountain bikes in his possession. The bike that was on eBay is one of only a handful ever made. Bob hand made mountain bike frames and thought he would sell beach cruisers as well. He got a few frames from Bassett and had custom head badges made for them. The fork on this particular bike is a Cal Cruiser 7/8” fork legs. Unfortunately Bob was arrested on some drug charges and closed shop, John Parker purchased what was left of Sweetheart Cycles and formed Yeti Cycles. This bike has close ties to me and my city of Long Beach. I found this at the BMX Society show and couldn’t be happier!

Re: 26" Cal Custom Cruisers and Strandies...ONLY!

Not sure if this project is acceptable here but here is my 81 King sting with canti’s installed by factory or bike shop who sold it originally. I wanted to build it beach crusier style. Thought it would be neat with custom pitch forks with canti mounts and a conversion headset. So from there figured I’d go with some nice XS midschool parts. I still need to find some golf brakes for it as wasn’t impressed with cheap dia compe v brakeshttp://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/239931/55f47bfc-9684-4545-bea7-b291be13d7f15ce9c2e884.jpeg

Re: 26" Cal Custom Cruisers and Strandies...ONLY!

Found in the wild this weekend.  Guy rode by us in Santa Cruz.  We were on our electric bikes so I swung around and caught up to him.  He is the original owner and bought it in 1983.  No, he wasn't interested in selling it.  He seemed happier with the rear wheel than the bike itself.
