Score, sort of...

My daughter has gotten jealous of the bike I've been putting together for my son, and she is also getting a bit big for the 16" bike she's been on for the past year.

She was really happy to see this Schwinn I found at the local Salvation Army for $7:

It needs a new chain and grips, both are on order from Porkchop. The chain is purple and the grips are pink.

I wasn't going to pick it up at first. Then I noticed that the parts on it were much nicer than I was expecting - the hubs, brakes, brake levers, and rims are actually pretty decent. I was expecting lower grade parts.

The frame is mild steel and is still on the heavy side, but it's fine for a younger kid (6 1/2) on her first 20" bike.

Schwinns are still nice bikes! That's what both my girls have.

OK, here's the bike after cleanup and putting it back together with my daughter:

We put on a purple KMC chain and pink/white grips from Porkchop.  She also helped me scrub up the tires and clean/repack the wheel and headset bearings.

She's 7, and has really taken to working on the bikes with me. My 10-year old son tolerates it, but my daughter really enjoys it.

She's even helped me lace up a set of wheels for one of my other builds:

Well, she's 14 now, so the Schwinn's a bit too small for her.

She and I built a 1998 Dyno Compe to replace the Schwinn.

When she outgrew that, we picked up a 1995 Trek 930 for her:

The only non-original parts are the tires. Everything else is stock and in really good shape.
