1984 Futura Freestyler

The rebirth of cool!

I originally got this bmx xmas '84 when I was 10 years old. Enjoyed it for a number of years and had good memories riding it as a kid throughout the mid/late 80's.

It was originally white with blue parts, kinda Skyway looking I guess. I hand sprayed it green a few years later and bought a few parts to match with the little money I had. I thought it looked cool anyway. It remained that way before being handed over to a younger cousin at some point in the early 90's. I forgot about it for a long time while it lived it's new life.Wasn't until May 2009 while visiting the family for a wedding that I managed to get it back after seeing it feeling sorry for itself laying exposed in an open barn. It has been well used and neglected, with many of the parts either changed or missing, but the bones were still there so had to save it. It was pretty rough in places and little could be saved except for the main frame and forks, but I knew I could get it looking sweet again one day.
The bike sat around my place for a long while since. In July 2018 I decided to get to work on it and soon it was stripped bare. Any parts I could make money on were sold to help fund a full rebuild. Spent time getting the frame back into shape and sorting out any minor work needed so it was fully ready for some new paint and a totally new look.Managed to save the chainring and seat post clamp which are only original parts off my original bike. Everything else was replaced using either NOS or good used parts restored where needed. All of the black and neon yellow parts were taken care of by SuperbikeDan, the premium bmx powdercoater here in the UK. He did an amazing job with his powder work on the frame. The finish is like glass and just glows!Decals were produced courtesy of Delcals. Got him to work his magic and print what was needed for the look I was going for. I chose lavender and chrome to complement the neon yellow for a rad mid 80's look. Had some inspiration from the Kuwahara's of the period which I love. The build was completed fully in January 2019 after a few extra parts were painted to add a little more neon into the mix. A couple of original RAD stickers were added top it off. Pretty happy with final result...
All in all, it's been a blast getting this bike back into shape, and far better than what i remember when it was new. It's been a nice nostalgia trip for me and has certainly given me the bug to build more bmx's. I guess one will never be enough.
Won't be letting this one go again in a hurry! :)
