Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

My neck is shot! C4-C7 are bad. My belly is bigger from sitting out injuries and happy weight of a new relationship. I'm also turning 50 this year!
None of that will stop me from "grabbing a slice" and going riding with friends like Stoney McGee (oldfatguybmx) Mike Stotsky (Ketch) and my paradaz family (Flat43bmx)!

To all those who think they can't or they're too old...no excuses! Get out there and do a trick!
You're never to old to get back out there and do an endo or a curb jump!
A wise man once said "You didn't quit riding because you got fat, you got fat because you quit riding!"

RideOn people! Bmx4life! Don't pose your bike...RIDE IT!

Re: Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

Herniated disc at L7-S1.
But I'm currently collecting some bottom of the barrel parts to make a thrash bike since the GT has wound up with too many NOS parts.
Damnit I'm not dead yet!!

Re: Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

True story John!  I suck at BMX but I still ride as often as I can which isn't very often unfortunately.  Lame tricks are my specialty, looking forward to some nice weather so I can do more of them!

Re: Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

As long as you have the heart you will always ride (trick ride).  I see myself trying to shred until I physically can't. At that point I'll probably transition a little deeper into my road bikes. I don't ever see myself collecting carpet queens. I'd probably build some crazy custom 26 inch fat tire bike (like the OCC) if I ever did a pub cruise.

God bless ya! I'm on on knee reconstruction, Ti plates & screws holding my left forearm together and multiple concussions & ligament tears. Wrists have been sprained more times than a whore gets laid, but as long as there's Advil, I'm rolling!

My knees are from Ramp riding for years (box jumps on midschool bikes) and the wrists/fingers are from multiple bails riding flat/park for 30 years. The arm was from a car crash and the concussions come from skatepark & street riding. Helmets weren't really required back in the early days so riding 8 footers without one could really ring your bell. Here's a shot from 94 at Rampage. (I have a nice brain bucket right?)

Re: Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

This box jump at Scrap is what claimed my right knee. The left knee was done downtown near Navy Pier (Chicago)

Also shown is a pic of a 1 footed abubaca from Rampage. Anyone whoe's ever done an abubaca and leaned too far forward on the rollback knows how easy it is to flip back and smack your melon.
The other pic is a few weeks after my car wreck. That one actually killed me (flatlined a few times for a few seconds each time) They brought me back in the trauma center.

They wanted to do a replacement of my neck discs. I did the physical therapy and it has made the pinched nerve much more manageble now. Do you do any PT to help loosen your back up?

Dang John-  I'm glad you are OK- nearly lost my daughter from blood clots that flat-lined her multiple times.  A super hero in an ER saved her, by not giving up on her.

Thats awesome they didn't give up on her! Everyone gives Cook County Hospital crap but their trauma center is one of the best in the world. The put my head & arm back together and they only had a few spare parts they left behind (common sense, good judgement, etc) hahaha

Re: Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

I’m 45 and just got back into the game. I rode back in the 80’s to mid 90’s. I needed a way to stay in shape during the winter months and felt like this would be great for the system. I race ATV’s on the National circuit during the summer months now. I’m definitely reliving my youth though on my new bikes. Rays bike park in Cleveland is providing a pretty cool place for me to get back into a groove again. Glad to see others doing it as well.

What he said.
2 herniated disc, arthritis, sciatica and some other crap ill keep to my self. the side affects of the pills are worse than the pain in my opinion. I love my morning dumps.

Re: Just an Old Fat Guy relearning bmx.

Dang you guys are making me feel weak.

I had a crash in November that messed up my elbow. I went to the track a few weeks ago thinking it was healed enough, but it was not. Going back tomorrow to try again. The wife rolled her eyes, but I'm going, and I'll know pretty quickly if I'm healed or should back off. I'm so ready to ride.

I like new school, it's all I ride.
