Re: Stranger Things

somehow related, somehow not related
one of my best friends, as i pointed out the bmx bike issue to him, pointed out HIS issue to me, see he used to be the guy in charge of the local arcade back when were kids (he is a couple years older than me) and after just looking at the trailer pointed out that the video game machines were in fact LED screens rigged to some boxes with what looked like emulation to him, basically, they all LOOK like an 80's arcade, but they are just fake

needless to say, the whole show just looks the part, i am sure some other people who know their stuff about any given set piece is prob saying the same stuff we are ...

Re: Stranger Things

It's crazy the effort they made to make everything look, 1980's. They certainly missed on the bikes and a few little details but a great show.

Re: Stranger Things

I thought about it, but the chain guard and pegs would never be installed, if I would have.  Pedals would be swapped too.

Yes, I have watched the show and I am a fan, but I am not a fan of those three items.

I keep buying and selling, so I guess I wasn't happy with the four I had left.

I have to say, as sad or frustrating as it may be, they most likely just don't care. Squirrelsmith is right here. The reality of shows like this is that they will have one, maybe two people in charge of all the period props. I don't really know how these people get into such a thing professionally, but they are often not really set up to succeed. Budget limitations are a big problem, as are time constraints. Also, consider that the same person in charge of the BMX bikes on this show had to also wrangle up pretty much every other period prop, from the classrooms to the bedrooms, and everywhere in between. They are overloaded, probably not really knowledgable beyond very superficial aspects of things, and sometimes just may not care to go the extra mile and get things 100% right. On top of all that, they aren't always eager to seek out help from enthusiasts, because of simple human arrogance. I.e., "I'm the professional prop master, I know what I'm doing, I have this all under control. I don't need help from someone who isn't in the entertainment business..." And then you end up with spray bombed new school rides with a threadless stem, and a banana seat hastily thrown on.

I encountered this sort of thing very recently. There was a show on HBO last year called Vinyl. I was contacted by the prop master because I was running a Craigslist ad, trying to sell off a mountain of concert PA gear that I just didn't have any use for. She asked a couple of basic questions about whether any of it would be accurate for 1973, but I could tell she really had no idea what any of it was or what was right or wrong. After a little back and forth, I got the gist of what she was trying to accomplish, and told her everything she would need in order to pull off an accurate representation of a rock concert in 1973, even down to the exact Marshall Major head that Mick Ronson was so well known for playing through. I did this at financial detriment to myself, since only a few pieces I had were appropriate for that decade, let alone that year. The ones I had that would have been correct, I offered to let go of for practically nothing. In the end, she didn't even bother getting one single thing right, and from what I understand just piled a bunch of big speakers on a stage and called it a day. Now, this show had HBO money behind it, was created by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorcese, and yet had someone in charge of the period details that was either too overwhelmed by her job, or just simply didn't care enough, to do any research at all. Her approach was just to ask randos if something was correct or not, but didn't really seem to care in the end what the answer even was. I was really surprised, and if I'm being honest, kind of jealous. I know I'd be far better at that job than some of the people apparently doing this for a living.

Back to Stranger Things, I read recently that the prop master was sweating it hard, because she was given I think $250,000 for all of the period props. $15,000 of that was for the bikes. Her concern was that she couldn't possibly get actual period bikes, since she needed 16 of them (4 bikes on screen, means each one needed 3 exact clones for closeups and stunt work). But at no point did she say that she even tried, at all. And I don't know...maybe it's just me, but if I had $15,000 to build 16 1983 period correct BMX bikes, I really don't think it would have been that hard. Those kids wouldn't need to be rocking JMCs and VDCs, let's be real. Stick one of them on a Torker MX, another on a low end Mongoose, at least one of them would have had a Predator, you get the idea. It really wouldn't have been hard, you just have to care.

"She" and "her"..... probably didnt help our cause. Not to be sexist, im quite the opposite but you guys know its probably true. She may not have given it much thought. Lets be honest she was probably right not to give it much thought, nobody knows but us and her

Its the same reason there is a mid 1980's Chevy door in MOST of the junkyard shots in The Sandlot said to be set in 1962.  No one really cared except for the eagle-eye truck guys.  The general populous of folks don't care.....Set designer wanted an old truck door, they got an old truck door and 90% of the viewing audience was none the wiser.
Basically what Im saying is, getting it wrong doesn't hurt profits so they don't care.

Wait wait wait, a mid 80s Chevy door in the sandlot. That’s one of my favorite movies. Junkyard scenes? As in the black and white scenes with squints palledorous grandpa?
