88 Haro FST

Hello all, I found a 1988 Haro FST in teal/blk all bone stock but have a few wonders about it being a real 88 Haro.
Now this frame has the FST stickers but it is a Invert frame as it does not have the rear foot stands, but it is painted and stickered in Haro teal/black.

The bike looks to be all original, even has a smoked chain guard with a 1980's metal seat post mast clam.
Tires are original skin walls that do show cracking of 30 years.
The overall bike is in decent shape with what I would say is 30 years of grease build up around certain parts, the parts themselves look to be original as well from the 1988, ya just can tell. Even the screw in fork stands looked like originals, again ya can just tell.

Here are the problems I see and would like your opinions.
The serial number was stamped on the bottom center of the downtube, near the BB, inverted on the downtube.
The frame did have a 25th anno sticker on the seat mast tube as well. (1988 w/25th anno sticker) The sticker did look like a 30 year old sticker tho.
Cost was 450.00

The placement of the serial number on the downtube is what frightened me.

My question is simple, has anyone seen a serial number on the bottom side of the down tube. I know Haro miss-painted a bunch of frames back in the mid 80's then, so it being a Invert frame stickered as a FST did not bother me, I prefer the foot stand-less frames anyways.

Re: 88 Haro FST

I also cant tell from the pictures if the head tube has the wrap around gusset or not. paint looks to be brand new for a 30 year old bile too. I am wondering if it could be psycho someone painted and stickered? Seems like a lot of work to make a buck. The front cheapo hub makes me wonder if it is really a Psycho in disguise??

Re: 88 Haro FST

All of the '88s were on the bottom of the down tube.....

Looks legit.  I'll fix your other pictures, but next time right click on them and select "copy image address".

December '87.  That's a real deal, no doubt in my mind.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Re: 88 Haro FST

Some 1988 Inverts were factory stickered as an FST.
it's actually not too un-common for that year. I've seen at least a dozen examples. And I've owned one very similar to yours.

Here are a few on the site right now:

Re: 88 Haro FST

The bike in your pics (now that I can see them) look 100% legit. An 88 Invert, factory stickered as an FST. With what looks like all correct parts... even the chain guard and reflector.  Nice!

Re: 88 Haro FST

Your question about the "25th Anniversary" sticker is simple.
it's not about the bike. It's a Bike shop sticker. They must have been celebrating their 25th year in business.... in 1988.

Re: 88 Haro FST

Thanks for the pic fix, I used to belong to the museum years ago but forgot how to post images correctly. The 25th sticker yes a bike shop sticker as I noticed it after I uploaded the pics, for some reason on my computer I could not really read it. Very cool indeed Ill buy it then. I know Haro made lots of miss-painted frames back in the day this is why I was not worried about the color sticker set.
Thanks guys for real, the serial number had me worried!! Thank you so much!!

Re: 88 Haro FST

I bought this bike tonight.  I knew when I bought it that it was an Invert frame, but all the parts look to be original and the bike is in really good shape.  I paid less than his asking price and to be honest I feel really good about the purchase.  Chromey (spelling??) I actually leaned on some of your old posts about the FST/Invert so thanks for the great information.  I am a pretty happy customer right now...
