1986 Schwinn Predator W/Redstone Mags question...

So the more research I do the more questions i seem to have...

Did the 86 Schwinn Free form ex with redstone mags come with a coaster brake from the factory?? I cant seem to find anyone who has a redstone mag from this year that has a freewheel hub?? And the conversion kit from what i read is junk. I want to restore this bike back to original condition so if original is a coaster then ill leave it as it is. All the predators i remember had free wheel hubs...

I know the 87s were freewheel on the EX model.  From memory, they had both available, the upper models had freewheel and lower models had the coaster.

I keep buying and selling, so I guess I wasn't happy with the four I had left.

In 1986, the EX with the Redstone mags had a coaster brake and the Z had freewheel.

I picked up an extremely clean and original ' 86 ex last week and it has the Redstones with a freewheel. Here is a pic for reference.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Nice!! Thanks everyone for the info... from what you all are saying... the majority of 86 ex's have coasters so finding a freewheel redstone mag is the "needle in the haystack" I think ill just fix this thing up real nice and keep an eye out for a freewheel redstone mag.

That's actually not a "freewheel" as freewheels go. that's actually a "freecoaster", it's a kit you could buy that would allow you to change the gears inside of the hub. It's super rare to find em with it. you might be able to find one you just have to find out exactly which internal shell it is in the rims and then hunt, lol

I got lots of stuff, what you need? lol

Re: 1986 Schwinn Predator W/Redstone Mags question...

My '86 Free Form EX with the Redstone mags absolutely, positively, definitely, came with a freewheel, not a freecoaster or coaster brakes. Not only do I know that for a fact (and I bought it new from the Schwinn dealership), but I would not have ever bought a bike with a coaster brake at that time.
