My Bike of 17 years

Just thought I would show off my DK promotion that I bought as a used frame in the summer of 1999 when I was around 11 years old.  It has been together and pretty much always ride-able since the day I bought it.  I started out with alot of parts from a mongoose and slowly switched those parts out with better new or used parts as I could come up with the money.  Over the last 5-10 years the bike has been sitting but thanks to a young nephew I put the bike in my basement and plan to bring it back to its former glory over the winter.

Re: My Bike of 17 years

I plan to keep alot of the parts I already have on the bike because they are part of the bike to me even though they arent correct.  The forks are trek forks that I bought brand new and they were chrome.  I am an automotive painter so I will probably pull the forks and handle bars and respray them with automotive base/clear.  The front Alex rim needs new bearings and re mounted on the front of the bike.  And it also needs a new brake lever, cable, and noodle.

Re: My Bike of 17 years

I will change worn parts out but I'd like it to still be the bike I grew up riding.  I did put a new set of DK grips on it probably 6 years ago because the old Primo grips were really soft and gummy.  I'd like to come across another seat like I have on it also.  I will replace the worn Items with Dk parts or parts from this era of bmx when I can.

Re: My Bike of 17 years

Thanks.  I cant wait to get it back to its former glory and start riding again.  I gave my Nephew a 1995 Diamondback frame and some parts i had from an old Dyno so he can put together an old school bike to ride with me.  He rides a dk right now but its a newer walmart one.

Re: My Bike of 17 years

Hell yeah, man.  I'd keep it just as it is, fix the front wheel and brakes and go riding.  Is the seatpost stuck or is the clamp just missing?

Re: My Bike of 17 years

Seatpost is stuck.  I will probably buy a clamp for it but as a kid I always rode without.  I am having a local decal maker make some PROMOTION decals for the top tube.  They probably wont be 100% right but I would like to get the name back on the bike since you don't see alot of Promotion's.

There's right, wrong and the way it was back in the day. When it comes to preserving memories along with a bike, right and wrong can take a hike. Enjoy the ressurection. smile

Thanks.  Thats the way I see it.  The memories I have with this bike and the parts on it are worth more to me than trying to put it back to correct original condition.

Re: My Bike of 17 years

here is a picture of me on my DK sometime around the summer of 2000.
http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo257/jott_06/Mobile%20Uploads/DSCF4737_zpsoiturhcv.jpg

and the next picture was probably from around 2006 when I got back into riding for a couple summers with one of my nephews.

Preach.  My friends looked at me funny when I told them I wasn't gonna repaint my '87 Predator.  It's not original, but it's exactly the way I rode it BITD and that's all that matters.  Plus, it's MY bike, not theirs big_smile

Re: My Bike of 17 years

Stopped in my old childhood bike shop last night to see if I could get bearings for my front hub and ended up buying this cool brake lever also.  As you can also see in the pic, my Promotion stickers are on now.
