My recent purchase

So after owning a couple of mongoose bikes I ventured out for other brands...came across a Hutch, then a Profile and then a Le Turbo (South African branded bike). I then decided I needed a pure Japanese bike in the collection.

I started building up stock of Japanese parts and then it only came down to finding a suitable frame.

A little while ago a Kuwahara laserlite got listed on the local adds and I communicated with the seller and went to view. At the time I thought the price was steep but decided at the end of the day to bite a small bullet even thought its not a fully spec'd one.

This is the pic of the bike on the ad.

http://s26.postimg.org/tk0y2opl5/ad_1438723331784.jpg

After viewing it I noticed it had quite a couple of good parts I actually do not have in my collection at all like Suntour broken arrow seat clamp, Nitto stem (MX2 or Shimano DX???), Maxy Cross crank (At least one side)...etc. The cheery on the top was seeing a laser post intact and that the bike was in overall good nic...even the rims faces were very nice and the added bonus of the OG Kuwahara frame pad. .

These are the pics I took on the day of viewing.

http://s26.postimg.org/n56ijr895/20150806_132044.jpg

I started putting some of the parts together to sell to purchase it. Within no time I had the cash in hand and missioned through.

Spoke to the seller and it was a done deal. He even wanted a pic of himself with the bike as well as its new owner (Me!!!).

The bike in the boot:

I ensured him it will be looked after proper and will restore it to its "era correct" former glory to the best of my ability. I would keep him up to date with the progress on the rebuild.

Then the bike was at home in my little workshop I call Grease Monkey Garage:

http://s26.postimg.org/ptwpw1ocp/20150809_132845.jpg

Then I found a gap to strip it down and give the frame a bit of a clean. Here are some pics.

Before:

After:

http://s26.postimg.org/4a66flitl/20150810_121846.jpg

Now bare in mind this build was supposed to take place next year. The more time I spent with it the more I wanted to do a mock build of it.

I got home one evening and decided to just do it...cleaned up a couple of parts and stuck to installing only Japanese parts to the frame. I ended up with this end result.

This is just a temporary build as I am waiting for some parts to complete it properly.

I will update this thread once complete or if anything major changes and I will upload it to the Bike museum.

cool

Great choice for your parts.  Cant do much better in my opinion.  Just make sure to ride it when you're done.

Thank you. I will definitely be riding it as all my others. LOL.

I installed the blue parts on the bike just as a temp as I am hoping to just go chrome / silver and black on this one. But this is what it currently looks like. I installed the SR cranks as I need a donor non drive side Maxy cross.

Re: My recent purchase

Making some progress with this one. So the plan of action is to keep it all Japanese. So I am a couple of steps closer.

I managed to trade a set of wheels for a black set of 7x Arayas with Suzue HF hubs and Shimano freewheel. Also in the trade I got a set of KKT pedals with Sugino cranks and Takagi chainring. Then I fitted a NOS set of OGK grips.

Here are the current pictures:

Re: My recent purchase

Looking great, I bought a stock survivor KYZ with the same black wheel set up you have on yours now. I would say you are going in the right direction with this build to keep it all Japanese.

Thanks man.

This is one build I am really excited about. I never had a Kuwahara as a kid as it wasn't one of the cool bikes in my area in my days. But learning about them these days has really opened my eyes a bit.
