1976 R&R CR-1

My one and only carpet queen...

well i never thought i would find one...my dad bought me a 76 CR-1, my first real BMX bike. i broke the frame a few years later and it hung in my mom's garage until she moved and GAVE IT AWAY at a garage sale!! never saw another one until i joined the forums last year. got this frame from another member. it was painted beige and had a repair sometime in it's past to the chainstay (they did a good job). the guys at my local chrome shop did a great polish and triple plate. let me say this now though... this will be the ONLY frame i ever have rechromed. it's just too darned perfect and i'm afraid to touch it. i prefer survivor bikes but there aren't many of these around so she gets to be my one carpet queen
hope to make some nice repro decals to make her complete as well as NOS cranks and seat.
i want to thank the following members that helped me out with this build:

and a big shout out to sandy finkelman, who's contributions to OS taught me more than i ever thought i'd know about R&R, Diamondback and just being an enthusiastic BMX fan and collector. sorry i never had the pleasure of meeting you sandy...

I had a R&R back in 81. Not sure what year it was, I think it was used, even though I bought it from a bike shop or it was just old leftover stock. Has to be the worst bike I ever rode lol. Not for older riders for sure. Probably great for a 10 year old or so. That being said, I would love to have one again. I was glad to read you found a bike you always wanted back. Love hearing stories like these, gives all of us who haven't found the bikes we gave up, HOPE.

No, I raced it for like a month or two then bought a Patterson, which was equally stupid low profile and hated that bike also. Traded the Patterson for a Quad which I owned before and have no clue why I got rid of my first one. I probably sold the R&R at the track for gas money since I raced so far from home often.

thanks for the positive words guys. just found an era correct seat and stem pad. only thing i need are decals...

wilko, yours has provided me with much needed eye candy while i searched for mine. one of my favs.

Again I got mine used. I only had it a month or two. I think they only had head tube decals and maybe seatstay decals??
Did they have a big R&R on the downtube? Im pretty sure mine didnt have any decals Im just trying to remember the old ads.

Me racing my R&R in 1981. Sorry this is only picture. I think looking at the picture I threw some Patterson decals on it lol. I do have some old ads if you need them.

They had chrome stickers that were on the seat stays, downtube and headtube.

You can see a few small details in the magazine reviews section where I have uploaded the BMXA review as a PDF.

The Centurion stickers were similar. I have a Centurion downtube sticker on mine.

Supposedly the bikes were shipped with no decals on and they were stickered at the shop as either Centurion or R&R depending on who was selling them.

BTW, I have an extra solid alloy seat post if you want one. It's long enough to go past the gusset and it won't bend or break!

yeah, i made sure i got a long chromo post that made it that far down.
there is a OS member that has scans and/or incomplete artwork files that i'm trying to get. i'm a graphic designer so i plan on finishing the files and have them professionally screen printed. i'll probably end up printing a few dozen.
you're lucky to have the OG decal in tact. according to posts i've read, sandy finkelman had the last set and they went to a friend, before he passed away a couple years ago.
if i ever get them printed i'll let you know. weren't the seatstay decals the same for both R&R and Centurion?

I'm a graphic artist, too.

I made a set of R&R art from photos, not stickers. I can send you the art if I can find it. I printed a set on label paper and stuck it on a frame that I sold on ebay a couple years back.

I got my NOS frame and centurion sticker from Sandy a couple of years back.

me and a guy who used to race against the R&Rs, Danny Oakley! Creator of the Moosegoose and pro factory racer BITD. it was a pleasure to meet him and talk about BMX from the racer and designer's perspective!

wow. we just had the annual scooter rally here in vegas and i got to talking with some of the old school guys, particularly the guy that owns "skatelab" in california. somehow the conversation went from "buckboard"s and "black knight"s to bmx bikes. strokers, webcos, motomags and what not. i got a R&R for my 14th birthday. everything custom. R&R frame, 10" ashtibula cranks, ashtibula seat post and goose neck, redline forks and bars, nickel plated chain, motomags...it was like a $300.00 bike in the 70's. it wasn't the best riding bike, those long cranks would have the pedals hit the ground under the slightest turns, but it was the coolest and "exclusivity" factor was unmatched. my ma sold it at a garage sale at some point, breaks my heart...but this probably doesn't compare to when my punker freinds stole her dad's military casket flag when i was having a garage sale while my ma was gone on vacation for months at a time, hey, i had to eat. that was a bitchen bike, i custom ordered everything down to the bearings. i knew i wasn't going to get that bike for my birthday, but when i went downstairs, there it was, sitting on a seperate support stand, you couldn't run a kickstand and be cool. its hard to find good stuff here in vegas. i look for pool cues and motorbikes...i'll add bicycles to my list, and skateboards.

here are some pics I took this weekend in my old childhood neighborhood. specifically, at the "jump" (now just a gradual elevation change and field of weeds) that broke my first R&R in 1982.

I was looking at a copy of the first BMX Action on eBay, saw the R&R test on the cover, Google R&R and it shot me here.

I'm a Diamondback Freak, so what involvement did Sandy Finkleman have with R&R?

I was curious why it was named "CR1" and found a company named R&R Aircraft and they put out a model called a CR1.

Here is what I found, but I think your bike is named after a plane.

The Curtiss-Wright CW-1 Junior, originally named the Curtiss-Robertson CR-1 Skeeter was a light sports aircraft produced in the United States in the 1930s. Designed as a minimalist, affordable aircraft, the Junior was marketed as "built to sell for the price of an automobile in the medium price class"
