Re: Homemade Trick Star tribute

I've been trying to talk my buddy into a similar project but he's looking at the welds and is getting worried.  I'm going to send him the link to this thread so I can see if it inspires him.  Can't wait to see the finished project.

A regular pipe bender would kink that pipe. Had to be a mandrel bender with 5/8 die.

Nope, not mandrel bent, he used a forming die with a follow die.

Most people wrongfully call a rotary draw bender (like the Pro-Tool 105 or JD²) a "mandrel" bender or a "pipe" bender (most people think of the Harbor Freight bottle jack type bender). If everyone needs a mandrel (has a ball or some other mandrel inside the tubing as it bends) bender to bend tubing successfully, there would be a lot more straight tubing in cars like that vette! Mandrel benders are very expensive and take up a lot of room!

Looks awesome so far! I would love to try building a frame one day! Look forward to the updates!

This is just awesome.  Tagged and watching.  Wow.

I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.  We're just the guys to do it.
