Re: 70's 26" "Diamond in the Ruff Score" :)

Thanks route66 for posting the Action ad/report.  Very cool read.  Man, $140 in 1980 was a ton of money for just a frame!  I love the the last three paragraphs in the report cool

So were these Champ frames made at the Redline factory in Chadsworth?  After Doug died in 76 did the shop move from Hayward/San Leandro?  I know Lynn and Mike bought the rights and name but I don't  if they moved the Champion shop to So Cal.

As a kid, the Champion name was huge in my home town in Fremont.  The local race track Baylands Raceway was always covered in "Champion" banners.   Although, they had a bmx track also, it was definitely all about the flat track Champion motorcycle frames at Baylands.  I'll have to post some pics of the track from the 70's if I can find them.  My dad was into the motorcycle & stock car racing back then.

If any of you boys have a line on some re-pop Champion frame decals, please hit me up smile

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy. smile

Just stripped it down a couple weeks ago.  Was hoping the original black finish under the white rattle can paint would be salvageable but no luck sad  The frame and bars are free of any damage but will need to be refinished.  This will be the only build I have that's been refinished.  Hate to do it but I just don't have a choice w/ this.  Removed the paint off the stem and it's in great shape.  Need to find a 26" 2.125" hoop for the front or a pair of hoops.  Not sure if I'm going to use the the rear hoop.  The rear Atom hub will stay w/ the build. I'm going to use a Normandy high flange front hub that's date stamped 78 that I already had left over from a 77 Motomag. Rest of the bike will be outfitted w/  190mm Ashtabula cranks, Rat Traps, 40T Addicks gear and spider, Hunt Wilde grips, fluted alum seat post and Addicks seat clamp.  Still not sure what kind of seat or tires I'm going to use.  Should have it completed sometime in late Jan or early Feb.  I've got a 76 RL Squareback to finish first.

After finding this Champion I figured my scores were done for 2012.  Well not quite.  I'm picking up a 79/80 GJS complete survivor Monday morning smile  I'll be posting some pics of the GJS here Monday as well.  2012 has been a great year!

Thanks again for all the compliments boys.  I keep this thread updated as I go through the build.  She's gonna be a real beauty!

Great to hear, better you than me...
If i had this sitting in this state i wouldn't be able to sleep with all the possibilities of how to rework it floating around in the membranes.

LOL  I hear ya Don...   I'm gonna try and keep it simple.  Don't want to many bells an whistles.  I've got plenty of other builds that keep my membranes working overtime w/ ideas changing all the time yikes

I'm still waiting to find a front wheel or a set of era correct 26" Ukai 2.125" hoops.  I decided not to refinish the frame.  So, I'm almost done removing the old white rattle can paint.  Countless hours have been spent on trying to preserve the underlying black finish.  I cant use a thinner or paint remover so I'm having to slowly wet sand everything.  Hope to have it done soon.  I'll post some pics here soon.

When you have 8-9 builds going on at one time, its easy to get distracted.  I really suck at just sticking to one project until its done.

If anyone can help me w/ a set of frame decals for this PLEASE hit me up!

  Thanks for the interest smile

Can't believe I hadn't seen this before. Amazing pickup and such a bitchen bike!

I hesitate to say it, but they way everything was white spray bombed you almost wonder if it was a ghost bike at some point.

Really awesome to save it and bring it back!

Re: 70's 26" "Diamond in the Ruff Score" :)

I picked one up here in SoCal a while ago. After having it for a little while the nephew of the original owner contacted me and I sold it back to him. He is a member on here and after his uncle passed away they had lost track of the bike. I would loved to have kept it and built it up, but it was great to get it back in to the family it came from.
