Can you paint mags?

Anybody ever painted mags?  i see some bikes in the musuem that match the bikes and mags exactly, so figure maybe it is possible.  If so, how to go about it?  i checked all the discussions on this forum and didnt see the topic, but i cant be the first guy to wonder about it.

Re: Can you paint mags?

there is spray paint made just for plastic, and if you use it correctly, it bonds well, but if your mag gets scratched, you will see the original color.  caliper breaks would also take the paint off.  if i had to guess, i'd say noone here is painting plastic mags.  what color mags are you looking for?

hey dj,

do you know what kind dye is best for this?  are there any special steps or things to lnow before you start?  this would be good info for those of us who haven't experimented with dying mags.

thanks

Re: Can you paint mags?

Yeah use rit dye, but make sure you get the liquid. get like 2 bottles per wheel and about 2 pounds of table salt. I bought this metal tub that looks like the bottom of a garbage can at home depot for like 15 bucks. You take the wheels and clean them really good. If you are going from white to a color, than bleach them first and clean the sides where the brake marks are. There is a post on bleaching on here somewheres, anyway so take the cleaned mags, if you haven't removed the guts yet do that and submerge the mags in just enough water in the barrel to cover the mags . Then take them out, put the barrel on the stove, make sure your wife isn't home. Buying new mags in any color is a hell of alot cheaper than a divorce!! Ok now once the barrel is on the stove dump in the 2 lbs of salt and the jugs of dye. use a spoon or something you don't mind throwing out and stir the stuff up really good. bring on the heat, no matter how high i had it on it would'nt boil and it worked fine. just keep it simmering, put the wheels in and watch them. flip em every 15 mins or so. becareful because once the starts taking it wont take long to get dark so if you are shooting for say light blue you need to keep a watchfull eye. Thats it. when they are the right shade hang them to dry. Once dry soak them in wd40 and it will seal the color in. put the guts back in and ride em. If you mess the color up.... don't stress. Buy the rit dye color remover and repeat the process. You may have to bleach them again after to get them bright white.

Wow,
what an interesting idea.
I assume you did that to Skyway Tuffs? has anyone tried other mafgs, like peregrine for instance? I had a set of super green ones once, wish I still had them. You guys know about Coloredtuffwheels.com too right?
http://www.coloredtuffs.com/shop/

Skyway even re-issued a couple colors..Red, Blue, Liht Blue and Green.
they even have sealed bearing
now!

mostly just thinkin' (always a challenge).  i am currently bleaching white GT mags from a 93 dyno (was on the "name the frame" forum a few days ago).  I am thinking about a blue/black color scheme for the bike.  your point about the calipers is a good one - probably rules out going from white to anything dark.  i may stick with white.
but the dying discussion is a good one- will keep in the file i started on bleaching mags, removing rust, etc..  thanks all.

Re: Can you paint mags?

You can get vinyl dye in a spray can.  Its super thin.  Almost like water so it takes multiple coats.  Only time I've used is on yellowed white mags that wouldn't bleach.  Very please with the results, you can no scrap it off.  its dye, not paint.
