1988 Robinson Cruiser 24
1988 Robinson Cruiser 24
incomplete Cruiser - need ´hints for the restoration
Bought this cruiser 6 yeras ago from a bikeshop in berlin and have it since then in the basement.Parts, as long as I know are: - Robinson cruiser frame - I suppose mid 80ies, pre GT/Robinson area because of loop-tail? - Bontrager Switchblade MTB-Fork (doesent really fit-ride sucks..) - Rims + Hubs: Sun /Chippok rims and sun-lite revolver hubs - Nitto MX II Stem - Robinson bars? not quite sure about that... - GT OPC with spider - Shimano DX Pedals so far the components. I´M not quite sure what to do with this bike: For restauration I would need the original fork, with seems to be a bit difficult to get. Can anybody help? Do I need the fork with the straight drop-outs like the older Robinsons? The serialnumber of the frame is: 3880206, stamped in the left, rear dropout. Any idears, how old this frame is and witch fork will fit? Would like to hear a few opinions about the bike...Thanks and greetings from germany, L.

Hi everybody, would like to discuss my bike in the forum. Will need a few parts to complete my robinson cruiser, but find it hard e.g. to find a original fork. Any ideas? Does anybody knows, if these frame/fork was sold as a complete bike or f/f only? Need information about decals, parts etc..every hint welcome!

Re: 1988 Robinson Cruiser 24
'88 Cruiser. First year GT product with the reinforment rings around the head tube. This is also the year they switched to the leading edge forks, but I'm fairly certain that ones with the straight dropout would be concidered appropriate also. Keep an eye on Ebay and the BMX sites and you might find a pair sooner or later. As for the decals there are actually some reproduction ones floating around take a look at the '88 robinsons here in the museum to get an idea of what they look like.

Re: 1988 Robinson Cruiser 24
Are you sure about the Year 88`?. There is another Robinson-Looptail-Cruiser in the museum (link here: http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/robinson/213 ) also with the reinforced ring around the headtube, the leading edge fork and is claimed to be from the year 86´...does the serialnumber tell you the year? But I would be glad, if i dont need the "straight-dropout-forks, because its very hard to get them...

Yep, serial denotes year on yours as 1988. You can try to contact that member and inquire wether those are the original forks or perhaps it was simlpy listed incorrectly. That's cats' got some serious bikes though!

Re: 1988 Robinson Cruiser 24
Still a bit confused about those reinforced ring around the headtube....looked at a few other Robinsons in the museum and saw a few with the same headtuberings from e.g. `85...so it seems to me, that can´t be the only evidence. Question: how do you "read" the serialnumber to be sure, that it`s a `88 GT-Made cruiser?

Re: 1988 Robinson Cruiser 24
GT took over Robinson in 85, so 86 was the first model year when GT had influence. The first thing that GT did was the plate on the seat tube, which I always thought was kinda cool. I don't know when they started adding the press-fit rings on the headtube, but apparently it was 88, which was the last year for the looptail. BTW, those rims are Sun Chinook, which are one of my favorites (I've been running them since '93), and the hubs are either Son-Lite Turbo or very early TNT Revolver. I'd need a closer look to say. I'd try like hell to find the straight drop forks, but I always liked that look.
