RL20II clean up...not quite resto
Hi all I am the original owner of my 86 RL20 II that is in near mint original condition after all these years. I'm taking it all apart and regreasing polishing, and replacing any worn components. Although it will no longer be used much I want it 100% fully capable and functional.
Few things that I am wondering about:
Fit Bike Company has come out with some new school freestyle tires called FAF (fast as f*uck) that look like they were made for a turquoise redline, they have a teal sidewall that matches Redline's color perfectly....I bought a set, could not resist. Currently on my Peregrine 48's are GT logo tires, that are just worn enough to have removed the nibs, but they are old and do feel a bit dry. So the question is, is it blasphemous to put the new school, better matching tires? Also is there a way to make my old GT tires more supple?
Chains, I bought a new all white KMC Z410chain, on my bike is a white and black Izumi…replace or keep old?
Brake mounting, I always felt that the bolts should be flush with the frame, then Diacompe did it, but my Redline has the smaller holes that don’t allow for the flush Allen bolt, I thought about drilling out the hole back in the day, but did not for fear of bare metal and rust, I also thought that eventually something better would come along and so better not mess with the frame and fork holes. Drill or no? MY brakes are 901 in rear and FS880 front.
Lastly, I have my original Turquoise Forklifter stem, I don’t have it on the bike, becsue as anyone who used that stem for freestyling may know the chromoly tube would eventually separate from the aluminum body. My solution was to acquire a beefy MCS stem. I did contemplate drilling a hole through the body and into the tube of the Forklifter stem to thread a flush mounted locking screw but never followed through…..thoughts?
I always had A’ME Unitrons, but they are unobtainium now, so I bought some teal new school limited edition Aaron Ross keyboard grips by Odyssey, color is extremely close to Redline’s, better color match than my aqua Unitrons.
Bought some midschool knurled Redline axle pegs to replace my well used metal GT ones. Will be reusing modified GT aluminum ones at front axle.
I used to sport the old school steel chain tensioner, just picked up a set of new school Redline aluminum ones.
Going to be taking bike to body shop to try and get some touch up paint for a few a few small nicks.
Considering rechroming my 401 Flight Cranks, I had bought them off a friend back in the 80s, they were already well used, in that the chrome was very worn from use and showing a hint of the copper underplating, they are not bad, but since I am going to be replacing the crank decals, I might as well make them 100% like new.
Anyone know where I can get just the turquoise fork decals and rear triangle, "Redline All Chromoly" decals?
I am thinking of stripping off the red from the Shimano DX pedals, then polishing them to mirror finish...hmm?
Thoughts opinion? Thanks

Forgot to add, about the Peregrine spokes, they are not chrome, and look very very dull, what can I do to brighten them up without removing the protective coating?

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto
Sorry for so many posts, cant edit my original post....what brake pads to use? I originally nad the Kool Stop finned, but sold them and got more modern gray Kool Stop pads sometime in the 90's, but sucked. So once again looking at Koolstop, but man they have a million models, which would be best and give me vicious brake grip without squealing like a dieing pig?

Nice ride, I'm working on one myself. Always keep your old parts, even tires...even if you want to switch some things up its always nice to have the ability return it to stock. Never alter your frame, big NO NO!!! No DRILL!!! I repeat don"t drill anything but your chick!......Grips you can find if you want to pay. Keep it OG, don't do anything but clean it up. The pedals do what you want, polish em up. I'd invest a little time and money and find the parts to make it proper, it will be worth it in the long run....

I agree w/Spector..... just clean it up and dont refinish anything ... keep it og/survivor. For riding .. new school tires are cool . I run Odyssey frequency G`s on my Redline because they look lke the OG ACS RL edge tires and they are reliable.
Keep all your old stuff. AND DEFINITELY DONT DRILL !?!?! ....

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto
Man my bike needed nothing and just with this this little "tune up" Im already out over $150, and I still need to powder the stem, strip and polish the pedals, rechrome the cranks and probably buy a few more things here and there. No wonder these things cost so much when complete! Sheeesh!

+1... I will add that if you plan on relearning tricks or plan on heavy riding, buy a FS880 or equivalent and beat that. They make for a nice, solid feeling rider.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto
Sent out my Flights to get rechromed at Chromemasters in TN, they chrome for OCC. Very reasonable prices, turn around is a little slow though.
Now need to do something about that stem, I think I am going with turquoise...dont know if I should paint or powder.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto
Thankfully a bike has a limited amount of things to fix and or replace, because I am slowly but surely increasing my aspirations for this clean up. Originally was going to reuse everything and just clean, polish, re-grease. Now I find myself looking to replace a large percentage of components.
So far:
- tires
- tubes
- rear pegs
- headset
- rotor cup
- grips
- donuts
- seat
- seat post
- seat post clamp
- brake cables
- brake pads
- chrome on cranks
- Some damaged or missing decals
- assorted hardware
- finish on pedals and stem
......and I still want a newer school sprocket!
I have two Jeep projects in my garage that started this way, just a little customization, thousands of dollars later Ive modified just about everything and they still are not done!

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto
One of several tricks I emplyed on my bike that has resulted in its great preservation. Once I get this thing done I will share everything I did. My tubing is spotless, no rust at all, even though I did ride it in the rain several times, by the ocean, and in the snow. This bike was used hard, everyday for many years, it was not some static object that was bought and put away, yet its preservation would lead you to believe that.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto
Ive seen so many dirt skirts for sale and never bothered to look twice given the prices and thinking mine was just fine. Well now I need one.
I remember that on a freestyle bike the moment you go shoving your foot behind that front wheel chances are you will clip the dirt skirt and bend it, that is exactly what happened when I first installed this. I also remember bending it back and even giving it a positive, upward bend to make for a tighter seal.
