Polish your Nuts..... & Bolts

I've been asked a few times here on the museum if the spindle bolts of the Profile Retro cranks on my Evel tribute bike were chromed? The answer is NO... they are polished, & it was really easy to do. So I figured I'd share my method, first thing I did was wrap the threads of the bolts in some 3-M painters tape, just because ya don't need issues later with threading. So, the bolts come gun black, which is a method used to keep bare metal from rusting & is really durable & CHEAP... so first you'll want to remove that with some 220 sand paperhttp://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Tribute%20Bike/IMG_4035.jpgWork the face of the bolt til most of the black has been removed, then switch to a lighter grade of SP, say like 400-600. It really helps to switch because the lighter grade gets the fine black left behind in the circular rings from the bolts machining, seen here - http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Tribute%20Bike/IMG_4036.jpg Once the bolt looks free of the black, switch again to an even finer grade SP, or scotch brite pad, this step evens out the face of the bolt & making it possible to polish.http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Tribute%20Bike/IMG_4040.jpgNow your getting somewhere is what you will be thinking after this step as the bolt face should look somewhat bright by this point. I chose to hit them with some #000 steel wool for a few minutes, & then it was on to the polishing wheel. I used red polishing compound on my bench wheel, there's no doubt you could do this with a drill & polishing attachment, although you'd want to use a vise to hold the hardware if ya choose to go that route.http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Tribute%20Bike/IMG_4041.jpgSo about 5-10 minutes each on the bench wheel, use gloves, not for the DIRTY factor but for the HEAT factor these puppies get real HOT after about 2 minutes on the wheel! So that's all for polishing, once they look like this:http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Tribute%20Bike/IMG_4044.jpgYou'll want to hit them with just a really light coat of clear at this point, because without that gun black to protect the face they will eventually start to pepper with oxidation. I think profile cranks look great but the GDH always looked unfinished to me so this was really a simple solution. Hope this helps anyone looking to do this...http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Tribute%20Bike/IMG_4043.jpghttp://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab99/flatlandfox/Evel%20Knievel%20Finished/Seat-1.jpgGood luck & post pic's if ya do!!

The "Chuckles" decal looks as though it is lifting off the frame. I thought you clear coated over everything.

BTW, the bolts came out great as well as the awesome bike!
