2012 Mongoose Kos Kruiser Tandem 26 - Modern twist on a rare classic

Six months ago I decided several things.

1. Tandem's serve a great function, but they do have some drawbacks. In my case, the first drawback was that most of them don't fit kids. Second was that I didn't want a road bike tandem, mountain bike tandem, beach cruiser tandem, or any other kind of tandem I'd ever seen other than the 1980's Kos tandem and the Metal Bikes tandem that Odyssey and Jimmy Levan built for InterBike a few years back.

2. Those two were what I wanted. This decision had a couple of problems associated with it, namely that the likelihood of my getting either one was slim-to-none and even if I did, it still wouldn’t solve the dilemma of kids not being able to ride it.

3. Next I decided that with over 30,000 members on BMX Museum, even if only 1-percent of those folks have kids that they want to ride with but aren’t always able to based on factors like destination, route, distance, etc., there’s at least 150 people here who’ve had the same thoughts as me.

4. Those 150 people would have an appreciation for, and possible desire to purchase, a tandem that checked the right boxes.

5. If the emotional connection to bikes that allow us to remember our youth is enough to get folks to cough up nearly 2 Grand for a pair of cranks that some factory guys couldn’t be paid to ride, and sharing that connection with your kids creates a stronger family bond, then building this bike is not insane.

You on the other hand, may just have a hot girlfriend who doesn’t know how to ride a bike. Either way, this bike had to be built.

In case you’re staring at the bizarre drivetrain, I can explain. The lower rear BB shell uses an eccentric BB, which allows the upper and lower rear BB’s to have proper chain tension. The “floating” chainring creates tension between the lower front and rear BB’s.
The idea with this set-up is that, with small kids you run a set of cranks up top, and a spindle with chainrings on the bottom. With anyone bigger, you run it like a standard tandem, and ignore the upper BB shell.

Here’s a list of answers to questions I know will be asked of me:

Q: Are you insane?
A: Aren’t we all?

Q: Do you work for Mongoose?
A: Maybe. If you want one for free, then no, I don’t.

Q: Will this be a production bike?
A: Unlikely as of now. If so it would be in very limited numbers.

Q: Are you insane?
A: Me? Didn’t you just ask me that like 20 seconds ago?

Q: Can you build me one?
A: Maybe. Go find 50 of your closest pals who are willing to buy it 6+ months in advance of production. Do it now.

Q: How much would it cost?
A: Probably more than a cherry set of full-wrap single-pinch Flights, and less than a pair of NOS magnesium Motomags.

Q: What age range is the rear designed to fit?
A: From your 5-year old to his Great-Grandma.

Q: Are you insane?
A: Do you have a concussion or something?

Re: 2012 Mongoose Kos Kruiser Tandem 26

Here's a few more photos:

The lower rear bottom bracket was machined incorrectly, so the eccentric bottom bracket assembly doesn’t fit. As a result I had to get creative with the way the chains run since I can’t tension them as intended:

The frame has a sliding mount for the rear disc brake caliper to allow the brake to move fore and aft as the wheel is moved to tension the chain:

Since the chain connecting the front and rear cranks isn’t running to the correct BB, which as mentioned takes the eccentric out of the equation, I had to use a cobbled together chain tensioner to keep things tight. Has worked surprisingly well so far, especially considering how sketchy the set-up is:

The beauty of a tandem is you can let your 6-year old do all the work:

Tandem on a standard bike roof rack? No problem! It fits perfectly! Even at 6’-2” tall, getting it up and down was a pretty squirrelly proposition:

Re: 2012 Mongoose Kos Kruiser Tandem 26

That is AWESOME cool

Did this start off as a Kos cruiser or is it all custom ?  How many hours went into making this beast ?

This was built from the ground up as a tandem by the very same people that build the current Kos - No regular Kos Kruisers were harmed in the making of this bike big_smile . Quite a few hours, especially if you include the assembly, which as mentioned was a bit complex since the eccentric isn't yet functional so I was lost in a sea of chains for a while there lol .

Who are the people who build the current Kos? I had assumed it was made in a bike factory in Taiwan or China, along with other Mongoose bikes.

What a great idea for those who have purchased a Retro Kos, and regret it!
Are plans/dimensions available at all?

Re: 2012 Mongoose Kos Kruiser Tandem 26

I like it a lot! Clever build.
I don't have 50 close friends, but I'd wait 6 months and pay upfront, if that's the requirement. Even a F/F offer would be great.

HURRAY!!! A visceral example of how to connect your son with the love you have for BMX while doing what you do best. You are a great builder and a great dad.
