1987 Boss Competition Freestyler
1987 Boss Competition Freestyler
I found this f/f & bars on ebay with a low buy it now about 15 minutes after it was posted. The paint was in rough shape and had faded to the point that everything looked like it had been spray bombed white. Thankfully the frame was nice and clean with no dents, dings or other damage. I knew going in that I would have to strip it and get it repainted but never in my life did I think the build would end up costing me about ten times the 'deal' that I got on ebay. The Competition Freestyler was sold as a complete bike, as opposed to the Pro Freestyler which was sold as a F/F & bar kit. This is my first, complete, restoration so I tried to keep it as close to a spec as possible. Obviously the powder isn't OG and it's not quite complete since I don't have the top tube decals, but I am very happy with the way everything turned out. At one point I considered making it a carpet queen but I decided to ride it some, since I'll get more value out of it. Most of the parts were bought from museum members but, unfortunately, I didn't keep notes so I can't thank anyone in particular. The rest of the parts were bought on ebay and a few others were picked up @ Albes (many thanks to the them for installing my bearing cups, for free, with no damage to the paint job..that's why they rule!!).

Re: 1987 Boss Competition Freestyler
Absolutely stunning. This is one that never got the credit it deserved back in the day. Boss was known more for their racing bikes. Their advertisements in BMX Plus! used to be really small, black and white ads that only took up maybe half a page. I think BMX Plus! did in fact test out one of their freestyle bikes one time, however. Still, a rare bike that I never got to see in person even to this day. You hit a homerun with this beauty. The ladder handlebars are one of my fave designs ever.

think iv viewd this 5 times now have to agree with brix stunning, anyone can color a bike but it all comes down to style an frame shape to make it work and people dont always look into that side of custom bikes
great job really is a nice bike

Excellent work, glad it was restored,
I like survivors, but restored to OEM specs is my favorite kind.
You don't HAVE to build every frame and fork you own... right?

Re: 1987 Boss Competition Freestyler
Thanks guys, I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that likes and appreciates how it turned out.
Steve71, I am not sure what the paint color was actually called. The intent was to try and match what was left on the forks but it didn't quite end up that way. I know that radberry came up during a call, before it was painted, but I seem to remember Chip saying he didn't think that it was a match. Couldn't really tell you if that's what he went with or not.....maybe I'll try to get a hold of him at some point and let you know.

Crackin resto mate, really dig this bike.
Will be changing the tires out shortly on mine and getting out and about on it, been sitting idle for far to long now. Have sorted a spare decal set, so i can always restore later down the track if need be.

Re: 1987 Boss Competition Freestyler
I have this same bike! After looking at it, i even replaced my old seat with the same one this bike has. i think my crank set might be different i cant remember, I'll have to go take a look when I get home. I've been tinkering with the idea of restoring mine. New paint, mags and hand grips would need to be the most of it. But can i ask if you had replaced the stickers? All my stickers are still on but are faded with the paint. Not from sitting around but from being used so much in my teen years. All i can say about this bike was it lasted years! with only normal maintenance. I never used to for freestyle tricks just my normal riding around. I ended up replacing this bike with a 2000 Diamond Back Fester. Only reason I replaced it was because the BMX already looked like it was super old and I was scared the mags might fail while riding. I imagine they become brittle with age??? BMX has slight scratches where the metal things on the cable touched the handle bars and the frame. Also some slight scratches here and there, but i was very sensitive with this bike so any scratches that happened were prob not on purpose.
I even had a guy try to purchase this bike from me I'd say 14years ago, he said he knew the guy that had designed it. I was a kid, i was like no way dude this is my bike.
