1984 Skyway T/A

I bought the frame from Ted in the US. The TA has been one of my dream bikes from back in the day, so its been a very exciting build.

I got the frame with original chrome which was looking quite faded, without any stickers and a couple of dings here and there, so it is not a show bike. I usually can't afford this kind of bike, and thought the show bike builders might give this one a miss.  I gave it a try and I think I was lucky to win with a lowish bid. Due to my stable being consisting of mostly chrome bikes, I thought this would make a great white project. It is still a work in progress, so I'll update the pics when completed.

A huge thanks to Gary for the Skyway mags. I think his restoration work on Tuff mags as well as Z rims is a work of art and well worth the money. Thanks to Brian for the CW Premium bars. These bars set up the whole vision in my head for the build. I simply had to find the matching seatpost. Thanks to Maria (Floridamar) for the Kashi seat. Her shipping costs to SA have been very reasonable and has made it possible for me to get a lot of cool goodies. And a huge thanks to Vince for the prototype Black Widow Odyssey cranks. I wanted something unique on the bike and I am really happy at how they look. He told me the whole story about Dwight Tardy riding with them, which I found to be quite fascinating. And a very special thanks to Chris Fey, who helped me with the powdercoating and most of the hard work with this build. I'm nervous with stickers, so I rely on his careful hands. Thanks bru.

White TAs are the biz. Good for you for getting your childhood dream bike. This was my dream bike too. I carted around in my pocket a two page write-up on the TA (BMX Action I think) for a couple years but never could get one. I have one now as well. Best looking bike ever IMHO. Keep it going!

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Thanks Keith. I never ever thought I'd be able to get one, especially at the prices they are going for now. This was a lucky break.I don't have to tell you how warm and fuzzy I feel when I see it in my collection. I'm sure you understand exactly how I feel ; )

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Thanks Ted (Trooper). I saw a set of CW Premium bars in one of my old magazines and always thought, that would be the perfect bars, and one day, I saw a person selling (I think it was bmxsis), so I jumped on it. I also have the matching CW Premium layback seatpost, which I'll put on when cleaned up. I never thought I'd ever find those parts. I'm glad you saw what became of your frame. I don't know if you had a history with it. I'll take good care of it.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Like an idiot, I broke the small hex bolt (reverse thread) on the left Skyway Tuff pedal when turning it the wrong way to loosen, to take the graphite body off the spindle. If anybody has one of these bolts to sell, or know where I can get a replacement, then please let me know.

Cool bike Trev, your collection is coming on, so sorry I was never able to catch up with you in SA when I was there last year. I have finally got my collection going, starting with a Patterson Jr frame and fork set.....off to the bike shop today looking for a crankset for it.....whoo hooo

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Hi Edmond. Ja, we have to try and meet when you are in SA again. Hopefully all my builds are complete when you see it all in real. Its been taking me quite a while. Cool, I'd love to see that Patterson of yours. Of course, you rode one all those years ago. There weren't many of them in SA BITD.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Sorry, was just so excited at how the bike turned out after getting the pedal chages anodised, that I didn't realise that the last pic needs to be rotated. I loaded from my BB, so I'll fix it from my work computer. Hope your necks don't get too sore looking at the last pic.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Thanks llm, I am actually going to redo the frame again. After meeting with Genix9 here in Johannesburg, he has told me how to fix the dents inthe frame and after seeing his great work, I am keen to get the dents fixed and the frame sprayed white again. The powdercoating on it now isn't the greatest looking when seen up close. And after seeing any of Genix's builds, you feel the urge to clean up your builds even more. His bikes and his craft is great inspiration. So these pics will be updated hopefully some time soon.
