1983 Schwinn Thrasher
1983 Schwinn Thrasher
The oldest bike in my collection.
I bought this Thrasher from the original owner. It had been hanging in his garage for over 25 years.
The owner was bragging up the fact he replaced the original tires with new ones in order to get it ready to sell. Makes me want to cry.
No kick Stand. Pads and grips look like after market replacements from way back then.
Everything else looks original to my untrained eye.

Re: 1983 Schwinn Thrasher
Your seat and grips are non original. Not sure about the pad. I can't see the brake lever well enough to know if it's orig. I have one exactly like it but yours is in much better condition and even has the chainguard and reflectors (EDIT: oops, guess you're missing the front reflector) which is nice.
Check mine out. This is exactly as I got it, not even cleaned (and it's still the same way today). I'm considering taking a couple parts off for another build.

You can do whatever you want with your bike, obviously, but considering that these aren't worth much, if I were you, I'd just replace the seat with something more era-correct (see mine, it's correct for the bike) and maybe the grips, and repair the cable or replace it with a cheap one. Otherwise, I'd just clean it up real nice. Actually, I'd leave the grips, they're fine. These are nice low-end bikes, but certainly nothing to stick money into, IMO, unless you owned one BITD or something. Fortunately, yours hardly needs anything. Nice find. These were made in Taiwan for Schwinn, by the way.

WTB: Nothing, unless it's a real cheap local survivor score!

Re: 1983 Schwinn Thrasher
As has been said already Taiwan made Schwinns just dont draw much interest. It does not mean they are not worth owning. I would leave it as is and if you trip across the correct part cheap grab it.
I've been riding mine every day since it's tuneup last week. I changed from the original tires as well but still have mine.
Nice score !!!
Wanted !
Looking for. 1988 or 1989 Pro Compe frame set or complete . And 1990 stamped power series cranks. Bikes Must have original paint

Thanks for the input guys.
Ya... she's a Taiwany but she's my Taiwany!
Some times I orginize group rides for 20" bikes here in town and I'm sure this will be a fun conversation piece.

I've never heard anything like that... interesting either way though.
