Filled my tire tubes with nitrogen

Took my GHP to a local place here that does nitrogen tire inflation and had my GHP tires inflated with nitrogen.  Supposed to be much less prone to "membrane leaking" and some other things.  It cost $20.  Heck, why not...  How's that for bling. smile

Re: Filled my tire tubes with nitrogen

*Ahem*

Rake here with a quick lesson in nitrogen tire inflation (I work for Goodyear, by the way).

Pure Nitrogen molecules are larger than "regular air" molecules, and therefore do not penetrate the components of a rubber tire (that is to say go flat) as fast.  Also with a lack of Oxygen comes a lack of water/evaporate swishing around in your tires.  So far we haven't done any actual road tests with Nitrogen inflation, so I'm not 100% sure if there are any fantastic advantages to doing so.

*carry on*

Re: Filled my tire tubes with nitrogen

we use it in our kart/car racing tires because it is stable,doesn-t increase pressure with temp.....and our bottle costs $32 to fill, would probably fill 500+ bike tires - at $20 a pair - THATS REDICKLESS.

It looks much better now.  I noticed but wasn't going to rag on you for having normal compressed atmospheric air in the tires in your previous posts.

Thanks,

Re: Filled my tire tubes with nitrogen

$20 nitrogen doesn't escape as fast and is a constant pressure.

FREE air escapes = FREE refill

Killer bike, but spend the $20 on mothers polish for the crank arms or something. Unless you're filling tires on a race car or airplane. Damn sick bike!

Re: Filled my tire tubes with nitrogen

Here is a quick lesson in chemistry.

Normal breathing air is made up of the following atoms (percentage in parentheses):

--Nitrogen (78%)
--Oxygen (21%)
--Other stuff like argon, carbon dioxide (1%)

These values have been rounded, but as you can see from the percentages that nitrogen
already takes up more than 3/4 of the space in the tires when using 'regular' air.
The reason that pure nitrogen is used in racecar tires (and airplane tires as well) is because
the lack of moisture in it allows the nitrogen to maintain a more stable pressure in differing
climates. It is NOT because the nitrogen doesn't leak out as fast!
Hope that this helps clear up any misinformation.

PS By the way, awesome ride!

Re: Filled my tire tubes with nitrogen

why not fill your tires with helium its proboly lighter than nitrogen and oygen but less explosive than hydrogen lol but theres not that big a differance in the end its a tire presure that matters

Not dumb at all.

1) The cement will not escape.

2) It also gives added strength to the rim. It would have been even stronger had you used some rebar to reinforce it.

Quickrete is coming out soon with an all new portable tire inflation system. Look for it at Home Depot soon.
