1987 GT Performer

1987 GT Performer for Christmas

I got this bike for Christmas in 1987.  My parents purchased it at the Bike Pedlar in Nashville, TN.  I rode it hard for 4 years.  I upgraded a few parts over the years.  I wish I had kept all the original parts.  I added a GT Epoch headset, GT mallet stem, Dyno bars, Dia-Compe Bulldog front brake, Odyssey locking levers, GT pegs, GT forkstanders, and GT framestanders in the first year of ownership.  My goal was to restore it to the condition it was in while I was riding it except for a couple upgrades.  I'm added a Dyno drainpipe seatpost and some metal pedals.

  * Frame/Fork:  1987 GT Performer
* Stem:  GT Mallet * Bars:  Dyno Pretzel * Headset:  GT Epoch * Cranks:  Stock * Wheels:  GT mags * Chainring: GT * Chain:  Stock * Front brake:  Diacompe Bulldog with Nippon micro adjuster * Rear brake:  Dia compe centerpull * Brake Levers:  Odyssey RX-3 * Rotor:  Odyssey Gyro * Seatpost clamp:  Odyssey * Seatpost:  Dyno Drainpipe * Seat:  GT * Tires:  Kenda Kontact * Pegs:  GT * Pedals:  GT * Forkstanders:  GT

Re: 1987 GT Performer

Thanks!  I have almost all the parts needed to restore it.  I'd like to find a GT wing seat and some GT tires.  I've been sniped twice on Ebay while bidding on GT mags.  I wanted that NOS set bad!

I definetely understand wanting to have a NOS set of mags....but the ones you have in front of the bike can definetaly be saved.
Just go to the restoration forum and search-Bleaching Mags-
By the way....welcome to the site. big_smile

Re: 1987 GT Performer

The one I just got was originally white, but somebody painted it.  I'm looking for a good way to remove the paint.  The scotchbrite method will take forever.

Re: 1987 GT Performer

DEFINITELY WANT TO SEE THIS BIKE WHEN YOUR FINISHED.  WHAT'S THE COLORS GONNA BE?  FOR SOME REASON THE DRAIN PIPE REALLY GOES WITH THE GT PERFORMERS.

Re: 1987 GT Performer

Thanks guys.  I'm going to go back with white.  That was the color I wanted when I got it and I still like it.  I want the bike to be like it was back when I was riding it with a few extras I wanted back then.  I always wanted metal GT pedals, a Dyno drainpipe seatpost, and Dia-Compe AD-990's, so I will add those.

Re: 1987 GT Performer

be careful on this build, this might be a start of a GT obsession.
there's a thread before here for those who are infected on this problem.

good luck and enjoy the build!

Re: 1987 GT Performer

Thanks for the comments.

I know what you mean.  I want to do a 1987 PP or PFT.  I'd gladly trade my 1997 PFT for one.  I think my wife will keep me from getting too obsessed.  tongue  I have my grandfather's farm tractor to restore too.

Re: 1987 GT Performer

I thought I'd post up some of the parts I've picked up for this bike.

Dia-Compe AD-990

I'm not going for a stock restoration.  I'm building it up exactly how I'd have built it in 1987 if I'd have had the money to do so.  I am planning to send it to Chip for powder and AD-990 mounts.  I'm going to order decals from AJK.  I'm still looking for a pair of Odyssey Barefeet tires and a 1987 GT seat.

I am thinking about having everything powdered white.  I'm talking about even the bearing cups (parts you see), pedals, and the cranks.  Everything on the bike will be white except the decals.  What do you think?

Whoa... and I thought I procrastinated on my projects..lol. Cool bike and cool that it's yours from so long ago. I recently picked up an all white 87 performer from the original owner. Great looking bikes. Hope you get it done!

Re: 1987 GT Performer

It has been close to being finished for 8 years or so.  I did the bleach thing on the mags and they were fairly nice looking for a while.  They have started to yellow.  I need to buy a pair of those new GT tires before they discontinue them or something.
