Bring forth the Guillotine.

Had a think about it, maybe I should stop sulking and being a bummer lol

As you will know if you follow my shit, I built a Kink Whip XL recently in a bid to get rid of my ton of spare parts and make something I can ride without trashing my Metal over the winter (beach, salt air, rain etc). It went well. However, as usual I ended up making it a pretty high end build. Not that it worries me about riding it in the winter, but what happened was even after selling off a F ton of parts and using loads I still have loads left. Most of them are new too, so it was a bit of a shame.

I was poking around on Ebay one night out of my nut on sleep meds and found this.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/puc85sq6166f16287.jpg

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/zeqckke6166f1672a.jpg

It was £49 delivered. Turned out to be a 2013 FBM Guillotine V3.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/rfgo9zd6166f1810d.jpg

It's Hi Ten, but certainly not what I could consider shitty or cheap. The RRP was $350, 7 years ago. So it wasn't cheap. Like, $150 Wally World shite. The geometry and spec is pretty much the same as all of their high end stuff, sans the 4130. It has a 4130 head tube, the rest is Hi Ten. However, even being hi ten it was still a light bike at 25lb fully built. The highest model in the range was just under 24, so it wasn't a huge weight saving. I doubt that at my age I could ever snap a frame, and I don't want to do any more expensive builds. There's just no point. I now have so many I could never ride any of them in anger any way.

So, once again I had the chance to get rid of the parts I had left, and will do so with aplomb. Before I get into that though let's go over the plans for the frame. I don't want it too bright. Done that many times over this year. I do want it to look sinister and much darker than some of the other builds I have done. Decals are important, so I emailed FBM to make sure they still shipped out orders. They said aye, so I ordered these for it.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/lfzo2tg6166f26bc0.jpg

I won't be hiding the fact it's a Guillotine or pretending it's anything it is not. I will be making custom Guillotine decals for the top tube. For the colour I fancied something like I said, pretty dark and sinister. I went about as dark as I dared with purple (blackberry) as the rest just look too black for me. I will explain why that wasn't a good idea in a sec.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/flame-orange-spray-paint-p3013-23947_zoom6166f2c3ac.jpg

It's darker than it looks. The reason I didn't want anything darker is this.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/montana-glitter-effect-spray-p44-21547_zoom6166f2d85c.jpg

If I put red flake over a purple that's so dark it will just become black. Which as I say, I did not want.

OK so that is the frame covered. Here are the parts going on the bike.

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

I was initially going to go with a black stem and sprocket, but the wheel set was polished. Will show that in a sec. As such I decided to roll with the polished theme a bit more.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/vatb9tp6166f39e9a.jpg

This is the wheel set. I got it nearly half price, so it was stupid cheap.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/4odughz6166f3b470.jpg

Nothing remarkable, single skin wide rims but the hubs and driver are sealed. Which at the price I paid? was excellent. A rear hub would have cost me more than the entire wheel set.

For grips I got Demo axes.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/demolition_axes_grips_purple_1024x102461602f2ecd6166f3eb4c.jpg

And will be using this lever here.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/dghgugv6166f3f65d.jpg

Pedals, grape Rubens.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/d3254762-fc6b-4541-b028-8cec9f9b6773_800x61602f37706166f40925.jpg

I had a set of Vocal bars that are very heavily cut. Too much so for modern grips. I deliberated about it, as they were all I had left, and got these bars here.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/p_20211011_1258436166f433dc.jpg

On sale for £31. They are United Air Jordan, 8.6" rise in transparent black which I like. Headset I have a sealed one I bought for the Morales, then bought a better one for the Morales. Not got any pics, but just think generic Chinesium in black lol.

Cranks.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/zzf7tjk6166f4dad3.jpg

Which I have a full Alone BB set for. Brake, still got this in the box.

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

Ignore the Demo Concorde fork. I initially placed an offer on that for £40, then forgot about it. Typical, I find something else and then 16 hours later he accepts my offer, FFS roll that said when I made the offer I was thinking about another bike any way, so I just paid for those too. What I found in the meantime though was rather nice.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/kvnlsc16166f56936.jpg

These were £30 delivered. I figured "Oh they're Eclat, they will do" and just bought them without really knowing what they were. Remember, I said cheap build. Like, sub £250 all in build. Then when I did some research I found out they are Eclat Storm forks. £150 RRP. Touch ! even better when I looked closer I realised at one point they were chrome, which are even more. Whether I can save it? IDK.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/93ylka56166f5bf13.jpg

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/o91jxhb6166f5ca05.jpg

They were cheap because they need a full strip and repaint. Like I say, I will try to save the chrome but there may have been a reason someone did that to them. Hopefully they just didn't like chrome lol

For the seat and post? BD and Cult.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/xfzfvbr6166f615b1.jpg

Clamp is Proper. Will paint this on the frame to match.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/sec95pe6166f62c01.jpg

Oh and I found a pic of the headset.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/kn9mrs26166f639d0.jpg

Chain is a Vocal half link in chrome. I think that's all of it. Oh wait no, tyres. Fly Ruben Campi I took off my Ruben.

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

That’s a cool bike!  A great option for a build to ride no doubt and some great deals too.  Looking forward to what you do with it… sub’d for the build cool

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

Cheers dude. I will ride it for sure. I am going to bring the two mid school bikes from my place to mum's, store those here and have the three new school riders where I can actually ride them.

Oh yeah forgot, I have two polished pegs too left over from the Mirra I stripped. So those will be going on too.

Now I need to remember to use a nylon brush to strip the fork and not a wire one lol I got a feeling that black paint is going to literally fall off. I've also got the Haro top cap too.

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

Well I decided to put the ladder up and go up to get all the shit out of my bedroom lol

I don't even remember doing this, but I must have been bored. Mock up V1.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/41840/p_20211013_1737596167153dd4.jpg

Fork was a mid school Hi Ten Mongoose fork that weighs a ton and I paid less than £10 for.

Set the bars and stem up.

I've never liked those tyres lol

I originally bought them for my GT Speed. I never liked the tan walls. Not on silver rims, or on purple ones. Then they went on the Ruben on black rims, still didn't like them. On polished though? yeah I think I finally like them lol

Those rims are strange, man. They are 40mm wide, so you need about 30 PSI in before the tyres even bed into the rims. They're supposed to be quite hardy though, so for a fatty like me that's ideal lol

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

They gave their completes some really cool names TBH.  The range went Guillotine, Heathen, Executioner and Warbird. I found some really cool drawings when I was home last, but can't seem to track them down here. Will post when I get back. For some reason those decals never appeared on the bikes though, and the ones that came on it were a bit... Erm, weird? I certainly don't like them that's for sure.

As I could see from pics, it is darker than it looked. Literally about as dark as I dared whilst still knowing it's purple.

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

Still couldn't find that bloody headset ! I really frickin dislike losing things. Spent about an hour digging through every box, every spares tin etc. Then I found the top cap. So one by one I looked at my bikes and then realised I used the bearings and cups on the STA when removed the blue one lol

So all I had was a blue one. Eww. Had a play with it, and managed to remove the sealed bearings in it without totally destroying them. One came apart, but I pressed it back together. I now have two blue cups with bearings to go back in.

Originally I had the idea of basically fitting the headset cups, then painting them with the frame so it looked like an IHS. Not sure whether I will still do that, or, after the success with that pink Fly brake recently I will just dunk them in oven cleaner and roll with them silver/polished.

Either way I gots a headset. Handy, I really didn't feel like buying anything else.

Re: Bring forth the Guillotine.

Don't know why but I had an irresistible urge to pre fit the headset and front end. Even though I wasn't really in the mood.

Bloody good thing I did. It didnt work. The Eclat fork is heavily tapered and has a built in crown race. Fearing the worst I got out a IHS bearing and tried that. Fitted over the fork fine. So I painstakingly took the bearing back out of the cup and tried that. It fitted fine too. WTF?.

Turns out it was the actual cup. It was a hair too small. One minute with a file in the inside and it now all works perfectly. I am glad I had the intuition. Otherwise I would have been smacking cups back out of a freshly painted frame. I think I am going to pre fit everything now. Mostly because of the amount of times I have been burned by parts not fitting as they should at build time when I have a frame I've spent two weeks working on.
