2010 Kink Gap resto

Got a Kink Gap complete on trade from a cool member recently that I'll do a resto on. He also threw in a few upgrades such as S&M bars, new grips,, Sunday sprocket with guard and a set of Mirraco forks, not to mention a extra set of tires.

Deciding what I'm going to do with the frame. Keep some of the original paint and integrate some additional paint scheme to address the missing paint or? Still deciding.

Bump for updates, anything going on?

Slow to start. Stripped frame of decals.

Also the wheelset is nice, Alienation rims, Mission hubs, 9t. The spokes are ok, but rusty a bit. I've got some right length stainless spokes I'm going to lace in and true up the wheels. A bit of wheelset labor goes a long way to making a cool bike.

Will get the adhesive all off and buff it with some cleaner wax to get to where I can see how good, and if consistent the orig paint is before making final to incorporate or a go with completely new finish.

Did a little more prep work on the frame.

Re: 2010 Kink Gap resto

Still thinking to raw some areas, leave some paint, in some sort of a design. If it looks to be going downhill, I can always prime and paint solid color.

If it's too random maybe you could do a raw/purple cammo pattern. smile

Most likely if I can keep it from looking like a turd, that's the pattern it will be.

Re: 2010 Kink Gap resto

Few mins of work haha

Keep in mind the purple is dull due to the wet sanding. A gloss coat will bring it back out.

I'll get some time when I can sit out in the sun and give it a go.

Just gotta avoid making it look like the Boost cow from the commercial, fine line to walk there. wink

True

1 sure lesson learned is when attempting something like this, keep it to only the frame. Unless someone is a professional painter, artist etc, it will 100% look like a hack job if you try to do the bars and forks along with the frame. My Mirraco red splatter bike is testament to that. Nearly matched the forks. Came out much better having only done the frame in splatter.

Yep. Building this as a give away bike. So unless it looks dope when finished, not going to make a kid look like a clown riding it.

Backup plan is dark metallic grey with gloss black forks. Silimiar scheme to my last Subrosa build.

Re: 2010 Kink Gap resto

That OG finish is powder.  Having sanded it, the metallics are damaged.  Even with a fresh coat of clear, it will not look the same.  You should get it repowdered in the same color if you like it.

Thx for the info.

Having got it wet when sanded it appears to pull the metallic still when sprayed with water.

I'm still thinking its paint as there is primer layer and sands easily. Power from my experience doesn't sand the same nor have primer layer.

Dope. I think they actually made it in that colour too ! cool

Re: 2010 Kink Gap resto

Decided on the cranks.

Had these Kink 175s for sale. Were white previously. Making them raw and trying my hand at engraving. Will clear them after. Might even rub a bit of black into the engraved area before the clearcoat.

Fun project and nice real world progression.  I’m liking the platinum and the cranks look 100% better raw.  Keep it up cool
