Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

I was a bit nervous for this next one, because i’ve never done it before... i took apart the bearings from the 3 spoke mags.
It actually went “smooth” lol
It was somewhat therapeutic working on the bearings. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/17414/8e63dfce-4c6f-4c06-a836-6dc1362ae5a95f08e19c24.jpeg

Also cleaned up with simple green and steel wool...

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

Nope! You just want the balls to be thoroughly covered pretty much to the dust covers. Obviously you do not need grease in the center of the hub where the axle goes through...

What is an OA bath???  I need to be gamed up!  How can I make my mildly scratched chrome look like new? Or is it possible…?

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

Nice work man! That thing was a rust bucket. Just out of curiosity, did you use OA crystal or liquid in your bath? What was your mix ratio? I never get that much yellowing. I guess I mix mine pretty weak.

Also, did you decide to paint? You can powder over chrome that is dulled out via media blasting otherwise adhesion can be an issue. Results may very depending on prep and chrome condition. I'm interested to know if you hear differently from your powder coating shop.

Also, what did you try on the final tarnished spots to get them cleaned up? Your rust was pretty bad.

Yes it was. I used 3 tablespoons of the crystals.
I decided to paint... their was to much thick rust in a lot of the corners. My bro is a painter, so i sanded the bike. I used 80, 150, 1200 grit sandpaper. I just haven’t had time to take it to him.
I wanted to prep the bike myself.
I love the work that goes in to it and i wanted to add some elbow grease.
On the tarnished spots i used “quick-glo”, great stuff!

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

Quick update,
A lot has happened since the last time i worked on this project... getting covid, pregnant wife getting covid, wife c-sec because of covid, baby in nicu (preemie),wife in hospital for 2 weeks fighting covid, myself holding down the fort with my 3 boys. PHUCK COVID!!

Wife & newborn daughter are home covid free!

I think have some time here & there and decided to enter the build-off in the mid-school category. I hope i can get it done on time. If not, its ok, my family is back with me!!
