1996 GT Performer Restoration

Whats up y’all!

I was finally able to gather some extra funds for this project.
The bike will be a custom og daily rider (GP PROFORMER).
I will be using/restoring what i can from what came with the bike.

This was one of the bikes i always wanted as a kid but wasn’t able to buy.
Now i have the opportunity to not only have one but also put my own flavor to something i think would of been factory in the mid 90’s.

I’m going to try my best to document as much as i can

Hope you guys will join me thru the process.

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

Time for an O.A bath...

Depending on how much rust comes off, will determine if I do a second round.

In the title, sure I know it’s his name so. To baiting members to view his post and it’s work. Lol

First I thought it’s a department GT copy bike til I open it.

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

The 2 pieces that had the most rust, ready to come out from 2nd round of O.A bath...

Just sprayed LPS3 inside every piece...

Next i will decide if i keep the bike chrome or paint it. I’m leaning towards painting it...

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

If painting it, you have to remove the chrome.

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

Finally got some time to work on the bike again... the chrome didn’t turn out the way i expected. Its difficult to see in pictures.
I decided that i will be painting the bike.
And i’m ok with that... kind of tired of an all chrome bike. I’ve already owned 2 in the past.
Excited for my 1st non-chrome bike.
Stay tuned...

Re: 1996 GT Performer Restoration

FYI you can powder directly over chrome. I did over my Rl20b on the front half because there was some chrome missing and it’s rock solid and durable.
