I had been on the lookout for an ’87 or ’88 GT Pro Performer or Pro Freestyle Tour for some time, but everything was either too expensive, or the sellers were unwilling to ship to Australia. So I cast the net a little wider and found a ’90 Performer frame set for a decent price.
The guy I bought it from flipped it after acquiring it himself from the original owner, then parting it out. The bike had spent its whole life in Ohio up to that point.  Overall, the frame was in good condition - no cracks, dings or rewelds - but it did have a fair amount of surface rust, and the original Electric Blue paint was flaky, faded, thin and tired.
I wanted a GT factory look, built to my taste in terms of style and rider components. This meant having a threadless fork, so I could run a 990 mount front caliper and chrome 48s. It also meant  changing up the stickers. I worked with Peter from ON3BMX to come up with the custom colours, which are now much more in the late 80s style. I love how these turned out!
Roberto from Roberto’s Custom Powder in Brisbane, Australia, applied the powder coat. The colour is a great match for the original Electric Blue and the finish is outstanding!
I wanted to be able to return the bike to original spec in future if desired, so in addition to keeping the Electric Blue finish, I have retained the accessories that came with the frame set. I carefully removed the original bike shop sticker and had it reproduced, as I wanted to retain that aspect of the bike’s history.
I’m really happy with how the bike turned out, it looks and rides great. The 1 1/8" headset conversion turned out perfect, everything is tight and spins free and the bike rolls and stops real nice.  Very happy with this build!

Re: 1990 GT Performer

Thanks gents. First proper ride the front axle got damaged doing some peg hops, so I had to mothball the bike for a couple of weeks after I finished the build. Supplier sent wrong axle, so had to wait another week or two to get the right one :/ All dialled in now though and enjoying riding this bike. As tight as my '19 Haro Master for sure! :D Front forks a bit twitchy with the minimal offset, but getting used to that now.

Thank you!

Your '91 was very nice too - I like the Tomahawk mags with the double bend down tube bikes
