Maybe his words just came off strong to me I guess Tim. Judging from his extremely impressive collection it looks like a investment to me but to each its own as well as the cooks. wink

And no, once again you guys are wrong. My bikes aren’t an investment. I ride them all. And I don’t even have most of the bikes in my bike listing anymore. I actually traded and sold most to my local friends for less than I paid for them and got out of this hobby Because of this very reason. I let people ruin a SPORT that I love and have loved since I was a kid. As someone who has passion for what they love and loved as a kid I began collecting what I enjoyed because I love the memories. Not the money I could sell them for. I recently got back into the so called “hobby” again because I wanted to build my daughter an old school bike like I had. And I got sucked in after being away from it for about 8 years. And yes, since being back I agree with the original post. Prices are ridiculous. Not on all things but on many.
And yes, you can thank these new collectors, I mean business people.

Re: Prices have skyrocketed

Just go ride your bikes. It’s more fun. And just so you know, that’s a 1982 redline proline survivor that I ride just like I did back in 1982. Except that was from this week. It’s not an investment, it’s a bike. And if it breaks, it breaks. I had more fun on it and that’s worth more than any money I could ever get from selling it. I never said I was smart with money, I just enjoy using the things I buy with it. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/2313/f3634ce5-8de7-45b7-abae-2de10b3942145ed0fecb8e.jpeg

Re: Prices have skyrocketed

A couple of months ago, I started off selling some things that I didn't need.  Not a lot, but enough to seed future build projects.  Next, I started buying items specific to those projects.  My hackles were raised in anticipation of failing to piece together a used Flight crank group, but I was fortunate enough to source everything needed to cobble it all together.  I've also been sitting on a pile of parts and frames that has been growing over the years, and this time has finally come for me to build it all up.  I feel fortunate to be in a place where I'm not subject to the gouging that clearly is going on in the hobby.  This, too, shall pass, my friends, but in the words of Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part.

Re: Prices have skyrocketed

It’s different for everyone. For me, if something costs too much then I don’t need it. Especially not immediately. I’ll wait or I’ll find something difference that suits my need. The big thing to remember is that everyone bitches about people’s asinine asking prices but asking prices really don’t mean anything. A person can ask any price they want but that won’t guarantee sale. Price will drop until it hits its value...what someone is willing to pay. If the value for certain items high then the value for certain items is high. That is the basic principle that the entire economy was built on here. Yes it’s a hobby but that doesn’t subject value of items to different rules. The government could always step in and start dictating prices for everything...

Re: Prices have skyrocketed

When prices of certain high quality items get too high then maybe it’s time to start developing similar but lower quality mass produced items...they look the same, have the same intended purposes but can be offered a much lower cost. Just a thought

Re: Prices have skyrocketed

I see a handful of items really driving the average pricing up, other items drifting along at the same prices they have been for years.
I do get the sense that part of the upward pressure is because the hobby is becoming a bit more international, rather than US-centric.
I respond to this in several ways.  One is to lower my expectations a bit (a part from 1984 that is a little sun faded is used rather than one that looks like NOS.) Another way is to take on projects that are a bit newer (I've learned to appreciate mid0school Schwinn stuff, even though I wasn't really part of the BMX scene during that era.) The last way, of course, is to hover over the for-sale section, swap meet, craigslist etc. and jump on any deals that pop-up. big_smile  It also helps to find local people who are into it and trade locally, deals can be much better if there's not shipping cost or damage in the transaction.

Re: Prices have skyrocketed

If you think it is too expensive? don't buy it. If you didn't then it would never be that expensive lol

BMX bikes are not sound investments like classic cars. Young people these days want to drive and experience classic cars. They don't want to ride old BMX bikes.

I mean pretty much new members who joined a day prior With no posts, no feedback, and post up crappy complete bikes For sale For $3000-$5000. Because that’s what’s happening. And the next guy thinks his bike is worth at least that, if not more. Then the veteran “sellers” start doing the same. So then he lists one for that. And there it begins.

And then guess what happens... everyone stops buying anything until prices go down.

This depends on what state you live in... all of the young adults in cali still want new dodge chargers, challengers, hellcats, mustang 5.0s, and anything fast and american...I'm just so glad I dont have to listen to those high pitch exhausts on every little Honda Civic that passes buy anymore.
