GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

So my Inlaws had my wife on this in the mid 80's.
We just dug it out of their old shed to clean up/refurb for our 7yo boy.

I've been cleaning on it, and want to do it as correct as possible.
I hope this is the proper forum to post my progress, as I am sure I will have plenty of questions.

I know I am already at a loss on replacement decals and pads.
But in the meantime, I have already overcome the whole 451mm rim education.
So I have extra 20" tires, and still waiting for the bike shop to locate 20 x 1 - 3/8. Apparently this stuff is not readily available, and the current bike craze is making it even longer wait times.

Here are some pics of the starting point.

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

So the inlaws were thinking this was 85 or 86.

Looking through the photo collection here, I was thinking the 1981.
But the serial number on the rear forks starts with 684, has 3 holes, and JR also stamped.

So still at a loss on year. Has dk neck, power light bars, uni, 451mm rims.

Not sure if it may be a 1984 frame, but with older parts swapped??

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

Thanks for the link... although mine still doesn't seem to match any formats.

Is it a bad idea to post a pic showing my number stamp??
I mean, is that something I should be concerned about or against the rules??

in the meantime, here is my artistic recreation..

That's what I figured... just odd, the components seem to match the 81 or 82 models.
I suppose it is entirely possible it was rebuilt at some point with other parts.

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

I got a good scrub down and some polishing done.
Shining pretty nice, at least in the garage. Lots of scratches and scuffs I am sure will show in the sunlight. But thats just character and history!

No sign of remaining frame or fork decals.. those must have disappeared long ago!

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

Ohh.. I also have the bonus frozen seat post, and the seat is turned to the right a bit.
I see that issue is common enough to have its very own thread.

I was thinking about drilling the seat rivot, and just drilling in another screw once its lined up.

Nope, it is metal for sure. Ive already torched it, and beat on it with a mallet.
It seems like someone may have JB welded it.

Here are better photos of the disaster going on with the seat post.

Lots of drilling and cutting happened here over the years.... ugh.

Wow. That’s a cool bike. I’d love it if one of my parents owned it. There are a few folks on here that can do some great work including replacing that seat post tube I’d it had to be done. But then the chrome would be F’ed. Keep at it. Have you tried pb blaster?

Get the post out. And run two clamps. It will be fine for a little one. Cool GT.

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

Here is some more updates....

Still need to locate a cable end adjustment nut for this lever.
Most of the local bike shops have little interest nowdays in anything that is not a 4K road or mountain bike.

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

So this is really about cleaning it up for my boy to ride.
If I am doing anything wrong speak up!! Let me know. Any advice is appreciated.
Cleaned and polished the crank and painted the sprocket and brake lever. I've been working on the freewheel... soaking a spraying it, flushing out the garbage. Ive got it clicking pretty well, but notice if there is too much tilt... it only spins but stops clicking.

Re: GT Jr. Project - Wife's Bike for Our Boy

So my first question is about decals...

Based on what I have found here so far (lots of great info!!) But I am still at a loss on which decal set this bike should have?? my serial numbers don't line up with the posted information... lol

Still am not able to uncover the mystery on which decals would have been on this bike.

GT's with a June 84 date code that were ordered as a F&F (did not come as a complete) would have the "4130" "GT BMX" wing decals.  The ones on the frame would be larger than the ones on the fork.  This would apply to the pro & expert.  I'm not 100% sure if it would apply to your junior.

This is awesome! Thanks man... I was picking up the wrong part tomorrow to bring home after waiting on the 451 ISO tires... I had previously gotten schooled on by wrong parts this past week!!

LOL. I keep thinking I am going to have my boy rolling any evening now for two weeks, and its been one thing after another the past 10 days. You just shaved me adding more... lol
