Quamen Race Build

Some of you may have seen this before - a prototype race frame made by Quamen, the now defunct Cali flatland brand:-

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/frame-015e793d2f6b.jpg

Still sporting a factory raw finish, it was made in or around 2010 but never released or put into production. The frame was built up and ridden by team members until 2013 when it was auctioned off on eBay, apparently by someone at Quamen clearing out a bunch of their stuff. It was bought by “FatGuy” who built it up in several guises before selling it last year. Thanks to “MoonBootLover”, it then made its way across the Pacific and after a few aborted attempts, I’ve finally started to put it together. Am trying not to go crazy with the build but that said, have already chopped and changed a few parts! lol

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/frame-fork-and-bars-15e793f5ce1.jpg

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/profile-cranks-65e793fc823.jpg

Rawed out Odyssey forks, Standard bars and Profile cranks! cool

Quick question regarding the cranks:- do I need Profile's tool or is there another way to install the cranks without one and/or without breaking anything??

Check out my 1983 VDC-built Trident, 1983 Kuwi Laserlite, 2010 GT Ultrabox 2, 2011 Crupi race rig and prototype Quamen, plus the all things Crupi & old school scene in Japan threads. Always interested in buying used, mid-school race plates.

Re: Quamen Race Build

I remember seeing that Quamen prototype and was interested because anything I ever seen from them was quality stuff.

Older profile cranks will slide right on the spindle. Or a little assistance from a rubber mallet is enough at times. A really thick washer covering the outer diameter of the crank boss and a long enough threaded bolt could work in a pinch also in theory.

Thanks man! Yeah, I love this frame. It has an offset seat tube as they were experimenting with different stuff for rear-end stiffness. A few more pics:-

Re: Quamen Race Build

Thanks guys! Am slowly getting this together. The frame came with a Tribute Bikes stem. I wasn’t so familiar with the brand, so contacted the owner of Tribute, who's also a member on here:- "ds-1". A top guy, who sorted me out with some replacement bolts. Unbeknown to me, there was also a tie-in with Quamen, who apparently supplied Tribute with headtubes for some of their frames. Some things are just meant to be! Stem pic:-

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/tribute-standard-15e7bdc4fc2.jpg

I originally planned to pick up a decent wheelset for the build but after a couple of near misses, decided to save some money and reuse my old race rims. They're unbranded alloy rims and hubs but are straight and match well with the overall look of the bike. However, one thing I wanted to change was the Nervar freewheel. I'd previously picked up a Halo Clickster on here, so decided to bust that out for the Quamen:-

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/halo-45e7bdea6b7.jpg

Whilst messing about with parts, I decided to sort out some frame decals. The frame was naked, save for a “QB” on the headtube. I decided to add a few decals and decided on two for the downtube and a third for the seat tube - all in the same silver/grey to match the headtube one. Del at Delcal Graphics in the UK already had some on file but this frame seems to use narrower tubing than the downtubes on Quamen’s flatland frames, so the decals had to be resized to fit:-

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/dels-decals-35e5b7cbd9b.jpg

The new decals look great and I want to apply them now but am going to wait until the build is finished to see how they look on the bike as a whole. cool

Re: Quamen Race Build

I picked up a used Profile 19mm internal Euro BB from “milhous”, along with an Avid/Shimano brakeset and some Box tensioners. Have already fitted the brake lever along with Cult/Vans grips from "djflo0042012":-

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.
