Yeh, someone mounted a hub that was too narrow without shimming it, hoping the new owner knows better. But it still looks like it's going to need to be welded.

Good thing you guys are on the job. I didn't notice that at first but didn't zoom in on them. Good eye guys

Re: Possibly 80s Redline..help!

My understanding is the bike was raced considerably bitd. It's likely seen it's share of hard impacts. Obviously the wheel set is not stock. Z48s were laced then never ridden.

Racing wasn't what cracked these, riding with a hub that was too narrow did it. I was there for some of this: ISO hubs were 100mm but nobody used them, Shimano/Suzue/Sunshine went with the Schwinn standard of 95-96mm, some ACS hubs were narrower, a difference of 1/4" wasn't that uncommon and the forks legs were far more rigid than the fork ends.

You can't put a price on peace of mind.

This too shall pass.

Use common sense. Or cents for most.

Re: Possibly 80s Redline..help!

My friend had his welded up and it held fine. You'll hear about grinding a v and so forth, but really you can just clean it, beat the crack closed, and have someone with a TIG follow the cracks.
