Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

Hey guys,

So i got this in November '19, I think it is a F/F combo that had been semi built and then it came up on here and FB with someone asking about value - a dude selling it on behalf of  his mate - I was talking to him on messenger then he went quiet, and obviously sold it.
A few months went by and the it came up here in Australia on a FB group, a few messages later and it was on its way to my place. In between that i had actually got some Switchblades in case i was playing the long game and waiting for the rest to pop up for sale one day, so i now have a chrome and a black pair of forks.

There is not a whole lot of info about these in general. I have trawled the corners of the internet and saved most images and scans of the two test magazine write ups done back in 91 on these bikes and am now just putting together my own build parts list. I am starting this because as these were a Frame/Fork/Seatpost combo only, they are open to interpretation, and as such i am open to parts ideas.

I have got a BNIB Pitbull 1 rear brake set on its way, I have a brake cable and a show mint Tech 77 lever to go with it - the mag write ups dont use the Pitbull but its something im keen to use. I have got some immaculate Crupi pro rounds on the way for it, these were on one of the test rigs BITD and usually i go for a square pedal look but ill give these a whirl and see how they go, i do like the look of the SR Speedtraps that were used on one build in the write ups.
Stem and cranks are an unknown, I have one set of 91 - 92 spec cranks that are rare and different, like the bike itself is, but im now sure until i have mocked up if they will get used, I personally dont like the look of Fusion cranks. An ESP stem was used in a write up, but im not keen to buy a stem for over a grand when ive never seen one in person. I have a NOS Fusion stem on the way so ill see if i like it.
Seat: I would prefer if i could find a MINT or NOS Kashimax RS Fusion..... lets see how lucky i could be.

Throw ideas at me and ill try and keep it updated with pics as i go with a little of whats going on with it. You never really see these with many pics up on the site, and i just think it should be seen not hoarded away.

It was a nos frame from what i am told before mock build in the past, wheels were never tightened ect, but i do plan to go on some rides when its done.

Cheers.

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

There is approx 1290 from one thread i have trawled through, but that is a number of made not sold i understand, and also ive seen only 8 variants in total from anywhere on the web, including this one. the composite name confuses some, as naturally many think it must mean carbon, when in fact composite refers to a construction of end result using a composition of elements - in this case - Alloy front, Chromo rear.
I do have Nuke Proof hubs, as a nod to the composite name, but I am trying to see when they became available, as i would like to stay in the 91/92 time frame.

As for the bonnet - part of the job. Spent 15 odd years in the series, was my job to make composite parts and modify others to suit, so i have a bit of memorabilia from the bad'ol days lying around. That bonnet was from when i was on car #9 in 2014. Other bits may show up as random backround stuff lol.

In one owner pic I have found and one scan of an advert there seems to be a darked yellow like the monocoque frames came out with as well.

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

So,

This is one set of rims I purchased as potential for this build. NOS Mavic TTM4 36 hole rims, a little shelf wear but nothing bad. These are very pretty and arrived from the UK this morning. I have a lead on some mint Fusion rims as well but I am not making this a Fusion spec build unless it suits, and if there are better parts to put on a high end rig - why not? These are the prettiest rims I have along side my early T1000 plain rims and Velocity Aeros. These look almost champagne colour. I'm thinking of Red anno hubs to contrast the decals, no matter what rim I use. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252566/img_20200109_0922475e1665fa43.jpg

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

didn't think the production numbers were that many..after seeing your pop up.. had another look under the BIKES section again and found a couple more Haro group1's.. only one built..still very nice frame set..and still looking forward to seeing it built..thought the rear was an option of Cro-mo,alloy or composite even after reading it was Cro-mo..in TOmmy Haro's post...with little info thinking maybe alloy/composit rear for jr.. and wondering why..hah..thanks for the info.. and thanks again for sharing M. ... is that bonnet been turned into some kind of beer shelf.. computer table..or for displaying awesome composite merc parts..you ever think about making some carbon bike frames or parts? Don't mean to derail your post with your other awesome life smile.... Is This the bonnet.. smile sorry really like the Mercedes Benz and ok.. holdens, fords, ect https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/220230/img_02145e173db8ae.png

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

I've known of 5 nos frame sets other than this one. Other used frames have come up over the years including mine. A raw unpainted rear end showed up some years back. Can't remember anymore who produced the frames for Haro.
Did Haro have any bikes made in the UK? for some reason I'm thinking there was some connection with these composite frames and the UK but I might be mixing that info up with something else. Hope someone can shed some light cool

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

Seems the bike manufacturers were searching for the  next big thing at the time.
Different frame materials, construction techniques, and some had a real Moto-X influence.

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

From the info I've found, including from one artical in 91 there was only ever one frame size made, no Jr or anything, and only in alloy front, chromo rear. That was from a haro rider in 91 in I think September 91 BMX plus. There was a raw rear end unearthed as per previous comment and I have found pics of a repainted green frame set (yuk). As for the bonnet, it was made into a shelf for 1/18 scale cars - I have a model of each car from the teams I worked for and the bonnet was no where near big enough lol. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252566/fb_img_15753428149435e1797b373.jpg

Seems that way for sure. I stopped racing about 96 and in NZ the most extreme bike I saw in the flesh was an Auburn. I didn't even know the Haro existed until a year ago lol.

In the mid-80's, Haro was purchased by West Coast Cycle Supply who also owned Nishiki.  Nishiki had Richard Cunningham (Mantis Cycles, later Editor Mountain Bike Action, now with Pink Bike) design their Alien and then the composite Alien following his Mantis SCR mountain bike.  They did a 20" bmx race version for Haro.

Would love to find my old Dirt Bike.  It was stolen in Pompano Beach, Florida in about 1996.  It's a '92 with the block graphics on a Green frame.  Pitchforks, Slam bars, King Headset, GT (DK-style) stem and GT/Profile cranks.  Superlace hubs.  Would really love to put this back in my collection.

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

I'm in.  This should be cool.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

This was my one prior to it getting sold to the guy I got it off. These were pics he sent me when I was in discussion with him about buying it originally.

The only thing I like on this in these pics is the bars. IMO GT stuff is just kinda wrong for this build, and I have 4 GT family Midschool race bikes with plenty on already.

Hi-vis or fluro paints can be difficult to photograph sometimes and have the proper colours come through. Auburn green is another colour that can be a challenge to photograph

Re: Haro Group 1 Advanced Composite build thread.

It would be interesting to see how she turns out built.  I love the  entire Group 1 Series.

Funny in an interview with Billy Griggs when he got picked up by Haro and Mikey King went to Redline, Billy said Haro was working on a new frame.  I wonder if this is what they made him after his input? I will dig up the BMXA issue over the weekend.
