Re: why are you in the hobby

In 2012 I was looking for a brake for my 87 predator to hang it on my wall at home.  I hadn't touched a BMX bike in about 20 years.

Then I found this site.
Then........

I.......
made a BOAT LOAD of friends - like really good friends both in person and via this site
learned more than i ever thought possible about bmx and every day learning more
flipped a TON of bikes, more than my wife will ever be aware of
built a freakish amount of keepers for the collection
learned how to "Launder Household Money" and redirect it
helped create and organize a local BMX scene
created and manage a BMX team
had a very small part in getting some BMX parts created
met a BUNCH of BMX LEGENDS
created some deep personal ties with the local tracks and LBS's
put a bunch of BMX bikes in the hands of kids that never would have had one
adults too, lol
Ride, race, street, park, flat - yeah!
and bought a sh*t load of bike parts!!!!!

smile smile smile

I think being in to it on and off since the 70's makes it a little more than a hobby. It's what I do!

Looking a set of Tioga Monoblock pedals. Also looking for a UFO Pro 24.

Re: why are you in the hobby

I liked to reminisce of a simpler time (for me anyways) - the late 70's - 80's.  Like I posted once before....riding my bike takes me away from car payments, I.T. work & things in general.

I love to look at old school bmx and just think how it was. Me and my friends riding around the block and one day actually heading downtown ( for us that was a big thing..no mom/dad - total freedom!)  We'd hit the arcades, the track for some practice laps and then get a slice (or 2 of pizza.) big_smile   Sitting in lunch or study hall and reading BMX Plus or Action and dog earing the pages of the bikes or parts i liked. Seeing California - via the magazines - seemed like a magical place. That's where most of the bmx stuff came from! wink

So yes I like to peruse the site and harken back to a much simpler time.  Of course when I see the pricing of "old school " stuff I'm like...ummm no. Even if I did have the $ I'd ride the bikes, not make them shelf queens.

Carpet queens are silly. It's a bicycle...it's meant to be ridden.

Re: why are you in the hobby

When I was a kid (early '80s), I rode and raced, but also spent a lot of time in the garage building bikes.  I was always finding and buying spares and used parts, assembling bikes, and selling them to my friends.  At nine years old, that was basically my first job (maybe second, after selling second-hand golf balls, which was how I raised the money to buy a lot of those parts).

Fast forward to 2012, divorced and with a six-year old who's getting into bike riding.  I introduce him to racing; he doesn't really take to it, but he loves building old school bikes, so we start growing our collection.  After a few years, he's moved on from the bike phase into something else, but I'm still hooked and decide to start racing again after a ~35 year hiatus.  Now I'm riding tracks and trails, building new school bikes, and looking forward to each new issue of "Pull" the same way I used to await the next issue of BMXA.

Re: why are you in the hobby

Lakewood, Colorado to be exact. Moose was untouched(in amazing condition) with exception of new tires.

drilled brake bridge was pieced together with whatever the kid could find til the mid 80s when it was left to rot under a tree in golden. so it was a mesh of cheap stuff(excluding the unknurled bars)

total haul cost me 225 bucks lol.

Re: why are you in the hobby

BMX reminds me of a great time in life in the early 80's (12 years old in 1983 so was perfect timing), riding all over everywhere with friends through towns and trails alike, stopping to get soda, candy, model kits, comics, race each other, whatever. Back when the World wasn't so freaking crazy and your parents could tell you to go play for the day and didn't have to worry about you getting kidnapped or killed.
Its a reasonably priced hobby compared to let's say, muscle cars or modern imports.
I'm a big kid at heart and I have a smile every time I ride.
I love all biking and have nice road and mountain, but I enjoy the simplicity of BMX with single gear and one brake.
