The very last PK Ripper frame to leave SE Racing America in 1999

First, here's a little back story on the end days of SE Racing under the OM and Mike Devitt. The press release :

October 21, 1999. "SE Racing Trademarks Change Hands. After 23 years, the SE Racing, trademarks are no longer controlled by it's founders. As a result the current U.S. manufacturing operation has closed its doors, shut down, history, finished, adios muchachos, GONE!!! Recently, Mike Devitt, who has run the company for many years, an outside investor, and SE's founder, Scot Breithaupt made a bid to buy out the foreign partners. A deal could not be struck, so they pulled the plug as of October 15th, 1999. The entire staff will leave the company to create a new brand. All the SE machinery and fixtures will be used for the new venture. Devitt says, "Our crew has been together for over 20 years, Sal Correa, shop foreman and his welding wizards, the sales guys, and I are anxious to get the new brand rolling. Our new partner, and Scot, and myself will start the new venture immediately. We will attack the BMX, jumping-freestyle and MTB markets with the same top quality innovations and promotions that made SE a powerhouse in the 70s and 80s. Diehard SE fanatics can still count on us, they will be blown away by the new bikes. A new name, a new company, a new challenge!"

So as many of you know, SE's Mike Devitt and Scot Breithaupt along with the SE employees joined forces with Gary Turner (founder of GT BMX) and started the companies of Alliant,  Axxis, Radix, Dirt Master, and Exxpress all under the Alliant unbrella from 2000-2006 before they all went their separate ways for good.

Sean Ewing (aka Shadessean) helped out at SE on evenings and weekends all through the 90s as well as Alliant through their tenure too. He's always been a wealth of info on midschool SE stuff and ended up with ALOT of one off prototype SE and Alliant frames and forks.

This NOS frame is the absolute last PK Ripper frame to leave SE when they closed on Oct 15, 1999.  The story goes: The phone rang after SE closed and it was the powder coater saying "Hey we have this last PK frame over here that needs paid for and picked up" so Mike D told Sean that if he ran over and got it, he could just have it so Sean went and picked it up, took it back to the shop and installed all the decals and hardware (brake studs and seat clamp nuts and bolts) and then took it home and hung it in his garage where it has been hanging for just two months short of 20 years (Oct will be 20 years). He called a friend of mine (private collector who has bought quite a bit of Sean's prototype stuff) and offered it to him last week and timing was bad for him so he got it for me. I cannot positively say this frame was the last one welded up but it is definitely the last one to be completed with powder and decals that left SE America.

If I hear the words "RARE", "GRAIL", or "SCORE" one more time, I'm gonna f'n puke. ALSO, NOS is NOT a condition description. Being NOS has NOTHING to do with the actual condition of the part.

That’s just totally rad. And I don’t care if you call me a snob, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s the last SE.

Very awesome story! It may be the last to leave the USA SE factory, but hopefully it never leaves USA! cool

Sweet!  I’m usually hard on people who don’t build frames up, but leaving that as is would totally make sense.

Love that colour. Same colour I did my quad, as it was one of the other colours I also didn't pick when I got my candy red quad.

Awesome find.

So awesome Brian!!!  Sean has so many gems.  I’m glad you got a hold of this one.  What makes this frame even more special is the color!  Wish it was a floval but you know me.

Re: The very last PK Ripper frame to leave SE Racing America in 1999

Thanks guys. Its NOS and a pretty substantial piece of SE history to me so it will NEVER be built. Its been preserved this long and will continue to be. The forks in the pics are from my green ano PK XL for the pics. I have a true mint NOS set of Landing Gear on the way that are from a case of boxed up Landing Gear forks found after SE closed also. Frame and fork will be displayed together but never have a headset installed. I have plenty of SE stuff that is built and rideable/ridden so there is no need in my eyes to build this one ever. Some people may but it will never be me for sure.
