Nice ride.  Remind me, are you going to add a front brake or no?

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

Stem is a good fit.

I really like how you did your other stem, but for some reason the front load looks better on the backtrail.

Thanks bro, I can’t remember if it’s the X2 and X3 or the X3 and the Backtrail Pro that come with the big block stems

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

Hello, I just bought a 2000 haro backtrail x2 chrome for $10.It's in a million pieces currently waiting on new bb bearings ,headset bearings, brake cable and pads. My question is this, What size is your frame and how tall are you? The top tube on mine is 20.5 inches however the forks seems junior size and I am afraid the bike will be too small for me. On a side note the frame cleaned up nice with mothers aluminum polish which removed the surface rust. Now just need to spray wd-40 internally otherwise my ocd will kick in. One more thing how do I post pictures?[img][/img]

You have to find a good site that’s still working where you can copy the source code that’s one way to do it, or just for over the $20 and you can post them that way by going pro. As far as the size of the frame I do believe the X0 is the shortest of them all I put laid back seat post on all my bikes due to this. I’m 5,8 by the way.

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

Here's some pictures of it as I bought it. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/273614/100_23595ebb364ea7.jpg

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/273614/100_23645ebb366594.jpg

After taking it apart and cleaning the frame I still need to clean weld areas

Giving some parts a citric acid bath

In hindsight probably could have used wd-40 however I wanted to experience giving bike parts a cap bath. The rust inside the frame is not too bad judging from my boroscope examinationhttps://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/273614/screenshot-from-2020-05-12-19-04-435ebb381a02.png
Going to just clean up weld areas with chrome polish and spray wd-40 into tubes.

So I was thumbing through the Museum for a chrome 14mm Haro fork for cheap. Then I remembered one of my Zippo frames that I just purchased it has a chrome fork on it. So I snatched it from the basement peeled the decals and cleaned it up a bit.

Nice! I'm working on some budget Backtrails myself. Question for all, have you found any stampings on your forks to determine if it is 4130 or not? X3 project I want to use 4130 straight shooters or Mega forks. X1 project I don't care as much as long as they are straight.

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

I just gave my forks a close exam and the only marking I could find that was legible is BTR X2 on steerer tube right above the crown race. There is another marking above that but I cannot make it out.

Nice your Haro decals are in great shape. Unfortunately my fork decals had to go bye bye they were all messed up. May or may not sand and paint might try bikespray? acrylic paint some guy on utube (oldshovel) uses it for his mtb restorations and he seems to have very good results. Kinda pricey at $14 a can however.

Fork after citric acid powder bath and decal removal using plastic scraperhttps://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/273614/100_24725ebc5f02df.jpg

Looking at some specs, it seems that the X2 had a full 4130 fork like the upper spec models. Is the steerer tube 1 piece cnc? Might be a pro fork then. X1 and X0 is 4130 steerer only.

Not a pro fork.  They use a very large diameter compression cap
