Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

Good morning Museum,
Here’s what graced my porch this morning
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/9d874066-9fec-464a-bc97-5727062e39b65d484b5d37.jpeg
I haven’t measured the chain yet so it’s in the parts bin (corner of the living room) with the rest of the “on hold” stuff.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/62c83f0a-e89d-4168-a567-8e57fa516ede5d484cace9.jpeg
So I can only do the seat and seat post for now, but it’s coming along nicely.https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/dc5ee491-3d0c-4563-9030-320e0df86fa45d484e1ed1.jpeg
The handlebars should be in tomorrow, I might cut them down a bit, but I’m not sure yet. I gotta get some citrus acid and soak the stem and seat clamp bolts as the rust is a eye sore.

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

Here’s where we are at this point, the new chain I purchased is painted silver, so that’s not going to work, so I went the cheap route! I bought some citric acid powder and put the chain, stem, and seat post clamp bolts in the solution were they will stay for the next 24 hours.

Still waiting for the bars to come in, so I’m going to try my hand at polishing this stem. I stripped the stem and we will see how this goes.

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

**LATE UPDATE**
So I get home from work and what’s outside on my porch, that’s right, the handlebars! Great job F***xhmm
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/ffcc7295-54e7-4cc8-b8cc-5bf4c81c00495d4a6ba41c.jpeg

So I went to work, cleaned the bars. Measured the grips and moved the brake lever, but I wasn’t feeling the black adjuster.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/8445b532-77e4-4c21-bd7e-0af3c4cc0e6e5d4a6fa481.jpeg
So I switched it big_smile

I seen somebody do this, figured why not! I should’ve measured and placed them in the same spot but oh well, had to rep the Museum cool

All complete, now I gotta polish the stem then install!

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

It’s looking pretty muddy in there! A few more hours will make a 24hr sit. I don’t know if I should just take the pieces out or not? I check them at the very least big_smilehttps://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/980557f0-abe8-4a20-bc8f-9a8a7be2d3465d4addf9a6.jpeg

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

I gotta say, this stuff works great!  Some of the parts were too far gone as far as rust but oh well.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/451a3c1c-a31a-4ba3-9017-3a650dc374385d4b0418c0.jpeg
I went to three hardware stores this morning and couldn’t get the correct grit sandpaper to polish the stem, so I put it on anyway
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/1cf6f63a-87e9-4a9c-9344-50a4570f5d765d4b04bc1e.jpeg
Installed the brake pads.

And here it is, minus the chain(needs chain lube) after a quick wipe down! If the stem comes out good, then all I will need his pedals. It cleaned up pretty good.

Me too brother, After tightening everything down I noticed that I’ve been riding this bike with a loose bottom bracket the whole time, so that needs to be addressed.  And I need to find some chain lube, wondering what else I could substitute it with?

Re: Super Budget Backtrail Build

So I lubed the chain, tightened the bottom bracket and took it for a spin. I was very surprised the ride was super smooth! One day I will disassembled the bike and give it a citric acid bath. But as of right now I’ll just enjoy the bike as is. Last few things to do on this build is polished the stem, get pedals and that’s it! I will revisit this bike later down the line after the other bikes are built.https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/252160/c21d3d6f-b050-4a2e-9164-e05aff982fc15d4c8d4a84.jpeg

It’s there,  Where are the top and bottom tube meet, near the dropouts, seat tube above the bottom bracket! But I can live with it for now!

I'd highly recommend a car polisher and some wax or compound, I bet you could clean that up fast without having to tear down and reassemble
