GT retro 26 build

It has been 2 years since I posted the build thread for my middle daughter's Haro Retro Master and I got the itch again so I decided to build up a different 26" for my own rider. I had been rocking my 26 Firemans Cruzer for about 4 years and though I really loved the bike I always wanted to get back to an old school chrome build. I sold the Firemans and set out to look for a chrome 26 to build up and ask others for their opinions. I decided to look for one of the new Gary Turner 26" frame sets in either the new style with threadless forks or the retro 1" threaded. By chance while messaging another great member on here and asking his opinion of the GT retro set that he had, he decides that as much as he loved it and it's quality, that there were other builds that he wanted to complete and that he would sell me his at a very fair price big_smile.

I want to do something different then I have seen so I am going to build it as my 26" tribute to the early 1984 GT Mach One as seen in these 2 ads. I always loved how clean and simple it looked cool

Here is the complete frame set as I received it. It was packed bomb-proof and the chrome is beautiful (except for my fingerprints).

Re: GT retro 26 build

I decided on and was lucky to find these Sun Rhyno Lite's in anodized blue with machined sides and sealed bearing hubs. When I couldn't find any 26" Comp 3 style tires with higher than 40 psi I opted for some Kenda 26 x 1.90 MTB tires. I think the less aggressive tread pattern mimics the Comp 3's plus these have a 65 psi rating for my adult size ass lol. I am running a trusty Shimano 17t freewheel also.

Re: GT retro 26 build

I have seen the topic of bars on cruisers debated on a few different threads and I can honestly say that my 6'-4" frame prefers running pro bars on a cruiser. I have a set of OG early unknurled GT pro bars but they are so minty that I could not bring myself to use them on a rider so I decided to look for new bars with a similar look and dimensions. I ended up buying these new SE Powerwings on sale from PlanetBMX and they are gonna work perfectly.

I added the new A'me rounds and the appropriate decals cool

I am going to run a new Tioga Bear Trap headset.

I was super stoked when I purchased this correct SR 422 stem in minty condition with original blue paint from another member on here big_smile

Re: GT retro 26 build

I am gonna keep it old school simple and go with the correct, minty SR 175 cranks and this will be my first time using a Tioga sealed bearing bottom bracket for the one piece cranks.

http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/76266/img_61005d276e9112.jpg

I decided to scoop up this NOS Suntour 39t chain ring and pair to the SR spider that I already had to give it the same look as the ads.
http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/76266/blue-suntour-39t5d276f606c.jpg

I don't want to run the SR 468 pedals because they feel too small for size 12 feet, so i started looking for blue SR 470's that were not going to cost me a fortune. After having no success finding them I decided to use a really clean set of silver 470's that I had in my stash and have them powder coated. I took them apart and dropped off the bodies along with a nasty SR seat clamp I had to be powdered in blue. I am pretty happy with the results as my guys did not go overly thick and lose the details on the pedals. I carefully sanded down the top side of the seat clamp back to the way it was and reveal the SR and Japan engravings. I have a little more polishing I want to do on the clamp. The pedals have the original survivor endcaps and reflectors plus I did absolutely no sanding or reshaping on the edges of the pedal bodies prior to powder cool

Re: GT retro 26 build

Thanks for the props guys! I hope to get everything finished this weekend and right now I am anxiously waiting for a special package to arrive in the mail today that I hope will be the best part of this build big_smile. Until then I can post up a pic of my brake choice. I am going to run an OG '84 dated DC 890 caliper with a new pair of Kool Stop salmon pads. The lever is just a re-issue DC Tech 3 until I find a nice original lever and the cables are brand new generic cables. Of course my adult size might wanna throw my matching OG 890 front caliper on as well for cruising and then I may want to find a pair of original levers tongue.

Re: GT retro 26 build

I had this set of repop decals in my stash from a previously planned build that I thought about using.
http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/76266/798cee37-2d94-4831-ad41-2b2ed56170d25d29c62b24.jpeg

I then realized they would not look right because one of the details that I really like about the bikes in the original ads is that they had decals that were never used in production. Their decals actually read “MACH - l” and their font and spacing also differs from the production decals. I have played around with making custom decals in the past so I set about drawing my own artwork to mimic the originals as best I could but I added one small detail so they would be appropriate for this bike ????. Once I was finished, I emailed my file across the pond to Del and he perfectly printed them for me cool I am completely stoked on these!

Re: GT retro 26 build

I got everything dialed and she’s ready to ride this evening. I am really stoked on this one and it turned out exactly how I wanted big_smile. Don’t worry though, the seat was only put on for the pics as it belongs to my son’s Pro Performer ???? I will switch to a comfy seat for cruising.
