26" "GT" Project - "84 - "86 Style

I was always partial to the '84 - '86 GTs as a '84 was my main bike BITD.  I always liked GT's advertising and components in the mid to late 80's also.

Here's my '84 that I purchased as a F/F when new:

And the new 26":

I'll post updates, but this will probably take quite a while to finish.

Re: 26" "GT" Project - "84 - "86 Style

Love it.  Standard is great stuff and what a classic to do!

I'm travelling this week....anything purchased will be shipped on ~6/6/20.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Re: 26" "GT" Project - "84 - "86 Style

Thanks guys!

Just to clarify, I'm not making a new version of my '84 although I would have really liked to.

Anyway, I got some take-offs from a new Performer:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/29158/wp_20190625_0015d12f8c2eb.jpg

And some new GT hubs:

Thanks! It's a custom one-off from Standard; they don't carry it. I designed the dropouts & specified the design of the frameset. I had originally contacted Gary Turner BMX for the build, but their communication was very poor & they seemed uninterested, so I went with Standard.

I think you made the right choice on your supplier.  Looks the part and certainly high quality.

Re: 26" "GT" Project - "84 - "86 Style

The Standard Bike custom thing is intriguing. I'd love to build a pink 24" Trickstar that accommodated my preference in gearing. I wonder if they could make 11" rise ladder bars

Then the lord looked upon the bored kids and said, “Let there be Bmx", and there was Bmx, and it was.......rad

Re: 26" "GT" Project - "84 - "86 Style

Not much progress as of yet.

I did get a reproduction set of '86-'88 pads.  I haven't decided yet whether to use these or the earlier style.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/29158/20190912_2114385d7b1f4287.jpg

And I had a machinist make a 1-1/8" '85 style seatpost clamp.  The work is super nice & I don't want to complain, but the font of the "GT" logo isn't correct (due to mis-communication).

Amazing clamp - you're a lucky one to have a machinist by your side making such lovely details for your build big_smile

Use the other pads and sell those to me!  They are blazing. And that seat post clamp is top floor. I want to see more, this is a great build!
