Score of the year? Awesome back story 35 years in the making.

Back in early 1983 I bought my brother a friends Race Inc. He raced it for about a year , had success on it & we decided to trade the frame, fork & stem for some parts long forgotten about.
My brother retired from BMX racing in the summer of 85' after breaking his collarbone. He raced once after that but was done. He has always supported me, my wife & my kids over the years as we continued & still do race.

1 1/2 years ago when I put on our Old School Gathering/Bike Show here in SLC, he showed up & saw alot of his old friends & loved the old bikes. He told me he wished he would of never gotten rid of his Race Inc. & would love to have another. Well, a little sleuthing on my part and questioning some of my buddies, I found out & remembered who we dealt his F&F to. My buddy Brad confirmed he got it from us & built it up for his future little brother in law back in that day. He reached out to his bro in law & he STILL had it........but at the time was not willing to part with it, damn!

Fast forward to this past weekend & I get a text from Brad, a picture of this dirty, beat Race Inc. I looked at it & I called him, "Is that Andrews old bike?", Yep, Brad said & his bro in law is ready to let it go. Brad had it in his possession. The guy wanted "whatever he could get from it". So I stopped into his work today & there it was....from 35 years ago, same bike shop sticker we raced for, the dings I remember so well & the chipped chrome behind the forks........unbelievable! It is in rough shape but big deal.

I just wanted the frame, fork & stem. Brad said just take the whole thing. I gave the bro in law 300 bucks & Brad a 200 tip for looking out for us. He wouldn't accept it but I demanded he take at least 100, he did.

The plan is tomorrow, I'm going to have my bro come over for some BS reason, get him in the back yard and have my son ride up on it and ask him if he likes his new bike then see how long it takes him to recognize it. I bet he squirts tears in about 60 seconds.
It blows me AWAY I was able to find this bike & get it back. I'm pretty sure it's going to get stripped down & mounted on his wall.

Here are some images from today & from 1983.
The black & white is my bro in the middle front.

The serial number reads - "RM 4, 1834" --------Jan 83' #4?

This is not the end of the story, I'll post up the conclusion when I present this bike to him, stay tuned.

I'm not going to be able to ship until about Friday this week.....Friday the 13th....oh no!

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Re: Score of the year? Awesome back story 35 years in the making.

FYI, both you guys Race Incs are a chomoly model named RM2.

RI serial numbers are very inconsistant starting as early as 1978, and do not 100% confirm even the year they were built. The 1st number after the RM (M stands for chomoly) is the “approximate” year built, but its wishy-washy at best.

So a RM4xxxx number is a RM2 model and is ASSUMED to have been made either in late 1981 or sometime in 1982. This is very loose and we have seen many anomalies that dont fit the numbering, as the original manufacture built great frames but wasnt organized very well. Stop by the Race Inc thread we have here as there is a lot of good info in there.

Great bike, even better story, cant wait to hear about the grand reveal.

The reveal!

10 minutes of hidden camera footage. He didn't cry but came damn close, this is raw footage so take it as it comes. He was blown away.

Very nice cool

What a surprise, especially thinking it is almost certain you’d never see your old frame / fork again after all those years.
