1980 Schwinn Sting

1980 The Schwinn Sting

I raced The Sting for a few years, not this actual bike. My bike, as well as my friends bike, got stolen from the front of a 7 Eleven store while we were right inside playing Astroids. That bike was my Sting and my friends was a GT. I was so sad, I had upgraded the bike, part by part, saving money from cutting grass and washing cars, for new cranks (like the 3 piece on this Sting, but red), xmas gifted forks etc. We put up signs around town, $200 REWARD BMX bikes stolen with photos. A few days later we got a call from a young girl who saw these 2 stoner guys bragging about these bikes they stole. So the police went over and got them back. we paid her $100 from each of us ($200) reward (a lot of money in 1982 ). Years later, my friend and I traded frames, so he had my Sting and I raced his GT (see 2nd photo above, taken from BMX Plus, 1982 in Shreveport, LA for a triple points ABA race. I remember my mom let me go to the triple points race. So I bummed a ride in Wild Bill's dad's small Pickup truck. They picked me up at 4:30am and drove from Houston, TX to Shreveport, LA. We had 4 of us and 3 BMX bikes, in this small truck. I remember that one or two of us rode in the truck bed most of the way there (forget seatbelts), trying to sleep in the back as it was dark still, but the wind and noise of the freeway, wouldn't allow it.
